Data Center Infrastructure Requirements
Data Center – Overview / Subsystems Cabling Infrastructure IT Security Control system Raised floor Air Conditioning & Ventilation Systems Early fire Warning system Fire detection Fire extinguishing Water warning systems Access control Monitoring & Infrastructure Management Systems Power Supply, UPS & Generator Systems
Main issues & concerns of Data Center Owners & Operators Data Center – What is important ? (Source: Datacenter Dynamics)
Power supply and air conditioning have become the limiting factor for implementation of Data Centers. Data Center - Limiting Factors Picture: Knürr
Data Center – Power Consumption Sources: EYP Mission Critical Facilities, Cisco IT, Network World, Customer Interviews, APC Reducing Data Center Power Consumption is a multi-faceted challenge. All areas need to be addressed to maximize data center compute capacity and minimize power costs.
Cold air pumped into plenum space beneath floor tiles and vented into cold aisles and returns through a ceiling plenum. Data Center – Airflow Efficiency
Airflow is blocked by a fully loaded raised floor For new buildings, cabling in the ceiling shall be considered for better management and improved airflow. Data Center – Airflow & Cable Placement Cable trays Cable trays Cable trays Cable trays Cable trays Cable trays Power cables Power cables Power cables
millions server units Data Center – Server Trends (1G, 10G, 40G and 100G) Source: Intel & Broadcom 10 year transition for 1G Ethernet 6 years for 10GBE 5 years for 40GBE
Comparison: Office Cabling <> Data Center Cabling Office Cabling: Static after installation Technology cycle: 5-10 years Lower density acceptable Downtimes less critical Physical environment less important Data Center Cabling: Dynamic Technology cycle: 3-5 years Highest density required Downtimes very critical Physical environment very important
Data Center – Infrastructure Requirements Highest Reliability and Availabilit y (= Quality ). High Infrastructure Performance to support various kinds of services. Shortest Deployment Time for Moves, Adds & Changes (MAC’s). Highest Density of all equipment. Redundancy Support to save Power Best possible control via Network and Infrastructure Management (including reliable documentation).

Editor's Notes

  • #9: Power including the power to remove the heat created in the data center has many root causes. If a customer wants to reduce their operational costs associated with power and cooling as well as increasing the useful life of their data center facility, they will need to address data center power in a more holistic fashion, and address issues such as cooling which have historically been less important
  • #29: All these concerns and the market trends brings us with the consequences of shown chaos… It is obvious that in this case it is a nightmare to handle yout cords. How are you going to document this. After 1 year at east 30-40% of the patchcordds are just hanging there and will not been used anymore. Drawback of this is that the switches will loose capacity due to the unused capacity. Think about how time consuming it is for the technician to do a job when he’s in front of such a mess. Funny thing about this picture is that explicitly is asked to DO NOT TOUCH ANY OF THESE WIRES. Offcourse if we look ninto the operational cost it is going skyhigh. Not only the additional floorspace is needed but this curtain of cords is blocking the airflow of the electronic components, again this influences the power and cooling requirements.
