DEFINATION :
• The glucose tolerance test is a medical test in which glucose is given
and blood sample take forward to determination how quick it is
cleared from the blood
OR
• The GTT is performed to determine how your body responds to
glucose you drink a glucose solution and your blood is taken at interval
to see how quick the glucose removed from the blood
OR
There are several types of
GT used in different
condition but the most
common one of them is oral
glucose test or OGTT
WHO IS GIVEN GTT
• The GTT is usually given to pregnant womens during 24th and 28th
week of pregnancy
• this test is also given to pregnant who has diabetic symptoms
• beside that GTT is also given to the patient who have high Glucose
level in blood
PREPRATION OF GTT
• have a normal diet like any other day
• inform the doctor about the varied prescription of drug you are taking
because certain drug can be false result
• fasting is required for 8 to 10 hours you might want to avoid using the
washroom period to testing as urine samples may be needed
• on margin of testing do not smoke or have coffee or caffeine based
product
• GTT is not done in sick person
GTT PROCEDURE
• At first a zero baseline blood sample is drawn
• now given a specific glucose dose to patient
• after that the blood sample are drawn at regular interval of 1, 2, 3 hours
to measure blood sample and in some condition insulin also measure
GTT values in different samples
RESULT
• Forget stationary diabetes no further test is required proper
medication and treatment can be started
• In case of diabetes in pre diabetes doctor start the treatment with
medication and dietary change
GTT NORMAL VALUE
• GTT normal value is lower than 140 mg per DL If the blood glucose
level is between 142 to 199 mg per DL then it is a strong indicator of
prediabetes
SIDE EFFECTS OF GTT
There is a risk attached with GTT which are follows
• people with high level of sugar have following side effect :
(I) nausea
(II) Stomach discomfort
(III)Diarrhoea
(IV) constipation
Side effect
• risk attached to drawing blood sample including the following
(I) swelling and redness at puncture
(II)site infection as puncture site fever
NOTE
• The normal blood glucose level is 70-110 mg/dl
• post meal plasma glucose 110-140 mg/dl
• random plasma glucose 72-110 mg/dl
THANKU YOU
