Examples and Exemplars

Lettering Make thick characters so you have lots of space for coloring. Overlap your characters and outline them. Two colors are almost always better than one color. This is a key to cool graffiti. A shadow can make your graffiti pop right off the page.
Balance & Principles of Design Balance: Symmetrical – Equal on both sides Asymmetrical – Informal placement Radial – From a center point Principles of Design: Proportion (size) Emphasis (one part stands out) Variety (differences) Rhythm (movement) Pattern (repeating) Unity (goes together)
Procedures Start with a balance plan – symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial Choose 2-3 other principles you want to emphasize Use objective pictures, lettering or symbols or non-objective designs but make sure the final design is original and not a copy of something you have seen Check out http://www.graffiticreator.net/ and play around with lettering and design Make several thumbnail size sketches to start brainstorming ideas on scrap paper Choose one of your sketches to create in full color on one side of your Art Portfolio Complete self-evaluation and hand-in
Materials Markers Black Permanent Markers Colored Pencil Crayons Crayons Pastels Acrylic Paint
Special Notes Be careful of black because it can smear and make your colors dirty – use last! Permanent Black Marker could be used for outlining if desired. If you paint, tape down paper to prevent curling Pastels for backgrounds or large areas only and they will need to be sprayed
