Exploring Web 2.0
What is Web 2.0 ? “ A new, improved, second version, user generated Web” which began with Tom O’Reilly; It is a revolution which has changed the digital world. The network has been seen as a programming platform, allowing users to create softwares applications of their own and facilitating collaboration and sharing;  Instead of self-containing data with a read-only format, it gave way to a Read/Write one; The knowledge, resources, and computing power of billions of people are now coming together into a massive collective force;
Services Three streams of development: The technology stream – provides the infrastructure groundwork of networking and hardware technology and software; The applications stream – includes RIA (Rich Internet Applications), which are desktop-like services and applications that are used on the internet; The socialization stream – includes user participation and contribution on the Web.
Web 2.0 Impact Easier navigation and matching results with more precision; Using Web sites like using desktop applications; Customization of user interfaces on search engines; Easier communication to share ideas, media, and information; Instant news updates; Putting knowlegde to use, by co-authoring content on encyclopedias and wikis since the development strategy is shifting from coding everything from scratch to assembling ready-made components.
Speed of reading increased the web 2.0 has changed the speed of reading; Internet users must learn to adapt and modify their reading styles according to the appropriate situation; Reading on the internet requires skimming and in-depth reading; RSS news feeds help, providing a way to receive content in short summaries easier to be scanned and selected.
Develop higher order thinking skills Its instructional tools can assist learners in developing higher-order thinking skills from remembering, to understanding, to apply. Increased participation and creativity Its services allows users to increase their emphasis on participation and creativity, and also interaction with audiences; Current retrieval updated Web 2.0 services are organized in reverse chronological order with their architecture orienting them towards the present.
Keeping Students Safe One of the biggest concern of parents and schools today is keeping the students in a physically and digitally safe environment; Safety is about responsibility, appropriateness, and common sense; The schools will need to evaluate each site case-by-case basis and individually unblock those that educators would be able to use to strengthen their particular curriculum area, basing their decisions on the maturity ot the students and the value of the site; The best way to protect young people is to teach them the strengths and weaknesses of Web 2.0 resources.
