GSRTC is the state road transport corporation of Gujarat, India. It was established in 1960 with 7 divisions, 76 depots, and 1767 buses. Today it has expanded significantly to 16 divisions, 126 depots, over 8000 buses, and 50,000 employees. GSRTC has extensively implemented e-governance initiatives like electronic ticketing machines, SMS-based timetables, and online reservation systems. It has also rolled out integrated depot management systems, MPLS-VPN connectivity, RFID smart cards, and online fleet management and passenger information systems to improve operations and services. Going forward, GSRTC aims to further utilize IT and digital technologies to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and compete effectively.

- 2. GSRTC at Glimpse ▪ GSRTC came into existence on 1st May, 1960 on formation of Gujarat ▪ At the time of inception : – 7 divisions – 76 depots – 7 divisional workshops – 1767 buses 5/2/2013 2

- 5. e-Governance initiatives ▪ GSRTC has extensively employed e-governance to set up 7700 electronic ticketing machines ▪ SMS based time tables ▪ Online time table for Express buses ▪ Biometric attendance system ▪ Core banking systems ▪ e-tendering ▪ Online passenger reservation system 5/2/2013 5

Integrated Depot Management System ▪ GSRTC has rolled out Integrated Data Management System (IDMS) in all of its 126 depots ▪ Within the next two years another 50 depots will be brought under this system ▪ The total project costs Rs. 100 Lakhs and the benefits include – Paper less working – Non duplication of work – Automatic maintenance of reports and records – Accessibility of MIS from any place and at any time as the system is web based 5/2/2013 6

MPLS-VPN Connectivity ▪ This is rolled out at 150 locations over a period of 2 years at Rs. 1.5 Crores ▪ Allied to this initiative is the Online Passenger Reservation System at the 125 bus stations as well as through internet and booking agents ▪ It has been implemented and resulted in benefit of passengers who can buy tickets for any two destinations from Bus Counters,Agents or online 5/2/2013 7

RFID/Smart Card Pass ▪ Currently the corporation has issued 1 lakh cards to daily commuters from 35 depots at the cost of Rs. 100 lakhs. ▪ Over the next two years 3 lakh daily commuters and students from all the depots will be covered at an aggregate expenditure of Rs. 7 Crores. ▪ These cards have multiple usage including- – Permanent data storage – Efficient data generation – Easy renewal – Prevention of misuse of passes – Conversion of the same to Cash Cards at GSRTC buses for the purpose of travelling. 5/2/2013 8

Personal Management System ▪ This is to be implemented in Central Office and all divisional offices at an estimated cost of Rs. 50 Lakhs. ▪ This centralizes the personal data of the information and shall minimize transaction costs and eliminate duplication of efforts. ▪ All administrative activities would be available to the authorized personnel at any point of time thereby minimizing reporting errors. 5/2/2013 9

Automated Driver Testing Systems ▪ This facility is to be set up at Chandola, Ahmedabad at a cost of Rs. 50 Lakhs. ▪ This shall enhance transparency in driver recruitment process ▪ Minimize human interferences and shall generate revenue through contracting out the facility to RTO and other driver training centers ▪ The operating cost for the corporation is covered by test fees. 5/2/2013 10

Online Fleet Management and Public Information System ▪ 2000 long distance buses have the Online Fleet management systems along with PIS at 100 major stations ▪ This is the single most important system which effectively and efficiently replaced the traffic checkers ▪ This system allows – Online tracking – Speed monitoring of the buses – Driving habits of the drivers – Immediate reliefs in case of breakdowns – Monitoring of unauthorized halts and route diversions – Details of expected time of arrival and automated announcements at the stations 5/2/2013 11

Online Vigilance and Surveillance Systems at bus stations and workshops ▪ This is planned for 60 major bus stations, 5 workshops, 16 divisional workshops and 125 depot workshops ▪ This is complementary to Fleet management system for bus stations and workshops ▪ Besides employee surveillance, this shall help in mitigating social crimes like – Pickpockets – Touts – Other unsocial activities in bus stations 5/2/2013 12

Other Technologies integrated ▪ Digital signage screens in 50 buses and five depots (implemented) ▪ Ahmedabad-based AGSTransact Technologies (Technology partner) ▪ Sambhaav Media(print and Out Of Home media (OOH) company) ▪ The depots would have: – Servers – power supply – Wi-Fi routers – 32″ LEDTVs. ▪ The 2000 buses will have: – LG/Viewsonic LEDTV screens with metal casing – inbuilt media player with 2GB RAM, 250GB hard disk drive 5/2/2013 13

Future Planning ▪ GSRTC is in the process of extensively using the IT & ITeS infrastructure to turn around and face competition. ▪ Its strategic investments in ITeS initiatives is likely to translate into manifold benefits ▪ Sustained sources of income, cost savings ▪ Means to improve efficiency and effectiveness 5/2/2013 14
