Open a blank MS
Word document

From the Tools drop-
down menu select
Options




From the Options
Dialogue Box select
Spelling & Grammar
Tab

Under Grammar title
left mouse click the
tick box to enable
‘Show Readability
Statistics’. A green
tick indicates ‘enabled’




Select OK button in          Refer to image above
the Options Dialogue
Box, bottom right of
box

Save and Close the
Word document


You have now enabled Readability Statistics tool, which can be used next time you launch MS
Word.

How to access and use MS Word Readability Statistics tool:

•    Select Spelling &
     Grammar button         in the
     Formatting tool bar
•    The Spelling & Grammar
     tool starts automatically.
     Work through the tool
     options (this checks spelling
     and grammar, giving you
     accept or change options)




•    Once the Spelling &
     Grammar tool has finished,
     the Readability Statistics
     are calculated automatically
     and displayed for your
     review




OR
•    Select Tools menu
•    Select Spelling &
     Grammar tool
•    The Spelling & Grammar
     tool starts automatically.
     Work through the tool

•   Assessing your Readability
    Statistics using the following
    guidelines




                                     Recommended statistics:
                                     • Sentence per Paragraph: 2 - 3
                                     • Word per Sentence: 15 - 18
                                     • Passive sentence: < 10%
                                     • Flesch Reading ease: higher the better (not mandatory)
                                     • Flesch-Kincaid Index: < 12
                                     • Bullet points: 3 - 5
