WHAT IS SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE ?

 Computer Instructions or data, anything that can
  be stored electronically is Software.
 Hardware is one that is tangible. The storage
devices (Hard disk, CD’s etc.,), mouse,
keyboard CPU and display devices (Monitor) are
  Hardware.
 FOR EXAMPLE:
  SOFTWARE – MSOFFICE
  HARDWARE – NETWORK SERVER

System software is a term referring to any
computer software which manages and controls
the hardware so that application software can
perform a task.

Application Software includes programs that do
real work for user.

Open source software (OSS) is computer software
whose source code is available under a license that
permits users to use, change, and improve the software,
and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified form.

 Proprietary software (also called non-free
software) is software with restrictions on using,
copying and modifying as enforced by the
proprietor.
WHAT ELSE IS THERE?

 Programming Languages:
• Machine Language
  • Consists of the 0s and 1s of binary code
• High Level Languages
  • Must be ‘complied’ (translated to machine language)
  • e.g. - COBOL, C++, Visual BASIC
• Programming tools designed to support the Web
  • HTML, XML – page formatting tools
  • Java - Platform-independent programming language
  • .NET - Microsoft business strategy aimed at
convergence of personal computing and the Web

RAM OR RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY

 Holds instructions for processing data,
 processed data, and raw data.

 Ram is measured by:
 Capacity (in Megabytes or Gigabytes)
   Speed (in Nanoseconds)
STORAGE DEVICE
 Electronic devices that store, retrieve, and
  save instructions and data.
 Today’s microcomputers or PCs include
  several types of storage devices.
 Capacity and speed are important
  considerations when selecting a new
  storage device for a PC.
HARD DISK
 Capacity is measured in gigabytes (GB or
  billions of bytes).
 Typically permanently installed.
 Used to store operating system,
  application software, utilities and data.
 Magnetic storage device
FLOPPY DISK DRIVES
 Capacity is 1.44 to 2.0 megabytes (MB or
 millions of bytes).
 Storage device with the smallest capacity
   Most portable storage media
 Magnetic storage device
CD- ROM DRIVES

 Typically installed on all new computer
systems. (Were add-on device until the
  mid 1990’s).
 Capacity is 600 to 750 megabytes
  (MB or millions of bytes).
 Most mass-produced commercial software
  is packaged on a CD.
KEYBOARD & MOUSE
 Input devices gather and translate data
into a form the computer understands.
 Primary input device:
 Keyboard - Most common input device; used
to type in commands and data.
 Mouse or trackball enhances user’s ability to
    input commands, manipulate text, images.
 Joystick useful in education as an adaptive
    or assistive input device.

OUTPUT DEVICE
 Monitors are the most commonly used
  output device.
 Monitors are connected to a computer
system via a port integrated on the video
  adapter or graphics card.
