This document discusses how purposeful conversation in the classroom can increase student comprehension. It asserts that adolescents are social and benefit from opportunities to collaborate with peers. When students are given time and guidance to discuss ideas and processes, they develop a greater sense of agency and remember information longer. The benefits students reported include gaining different perspectives, having concepts explained in new ways, and expanding their own thinking. While challenging aspects can include uneven participation, keeping an open mind is important. Teachers must explicitly teach collaboration skills to help students have deep, meaningful discussions.
