An Introduction to the Common Core
State Standards for Mathematics
What they mean for you and your
children
WELCOME
INTRODUCTIONS
Today’s Objectives
• Understand what college and career
readiness is and why it matters
• Overview of the new mathematics
standards
• Introduction to high school integrated
mathematics
• New testing
• What can you do as a parent to help your
child be successful in mathematics
What do we mean by implementing the
Common Core?
• 44 states have signed and adopted the new
Common Core Standards.
• California is planning full implementation of
the Common Core Standards by 2015.
“fully implemented?”
• Current first graders will be the first class to be fully
immersed in common core by the time they graduate
high school.
• Everyone else will experience a hybrid of common
core and previously implemented mathematics.
You have experienced about
7.692% Common Core!
College and Career Readiness
• The new standards will get students ready for success in
college and the workforce.
…but what does that mean?
College Readiness
• “College” doesn’t just mean an undergraduate
degree. It can mean any program that leads to
any degree or certificate.
• College readiness means that
high school graduates will
finally have specific and college
board recommended skills
needed to succeed in their
freshman year and beyond.
Career Readiness
• “Career” doesn’t just mean having a job. It
means working in a profession that allows them
to earn a competitive wage.
• Career readiness means
that high school graduates
are also mentally prepared to
succeed in a long-term
career.
What are the Common Core Standards?
• A single set of standards adopted nation-
wide for English language arts and
mathematics
• A guide to help students and parents set
clear and realistic goals for success
• A first step in providing young people with
the education necessary to prepare them
for success in college and careers
The new standards will…
•Ensure that every child in the
nation is held to the same high
standards and learns the same
material, regardless of race,
ethnicity, religion, or zip code
Implementation Summary
2013-2014
• Common Core Instruction in grades K-1
• Begin implementation of Common Core Instruction in grades 2-12
2014-2015
• Full Common Core Instruction in grades K-12
• Begin Common Core Instruction of Integrated I
2015-2016
• Continue Common Core Instruction of Integrated I
• Begin Common Core Instruction of Integrated II and III
2016-2017
• Continue full Common Core Instruction of grades K-12
Two Types of Mathematics Standards
• Ratios and Proportional Relationships-Analyze relationships
and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
• The Number System-Apply and extend previous
understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract,
multiply, and divide rational numbers.
• Expressions and Equations-Use properties of operations to
generate equivalent expressions.
• Geometry-Draw, construct and describe geometrical figures
and describe the relationships between them.
• Statistics and Probability-Use random sampling to draw
inferences about a population.

Standards
Mathematical
Practice
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving
them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning
of others.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Highlights of Major Work in Grades K-8
K-2 Addition and subtraction-concepts, skills, and
problem solving; place value
3-5 Multiplication and division of whole numbers
and fractions-concepts, skills, and problem
solving
6 Ratios and proportional relationships; early
expressions and equations
7 Ratios and proportional relationships;
arithmetic of rational numbers
8 Linear algebra and linear functions; geometry
Highlights of Major Work in Grades 9-12
9 Math I: Algebra 1, Geometry, Statistics
10 Math II: Algebra 1 and Algebra 2, Geometry,
Statistics
11 Math III: Algebra 2, Geometry, Statistics,
Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus
12 Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus, Statistics, AP
Statistics, or Technical Career Courses
New Testing
• Star Report is being replaced by CAASPP (California
Assessment of Student Performance and Progress)
• SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium)
tests are administered in grades 3-8 and 11 in
English language arts and math aligned to the
Common Core State Standards
• Computerized testing begins in the 2014-2015 school
year
• Uses computer-adaptive technology to tailor
questions based on student ability
• Results are delivered faster with greater security
Test Questions Include…
• Multiple Choice (Selected-response)
• Short Answer (Constructed-response)
• Answer with Justification (Extended-response)
• Using Computer Calculator (Technology-enhanced)
• Real Life Question in Multiple Parts (Performance
task)
Go to www.hlpschools.org and click on California
Common Core Standards (CCSS) under Featured
Web Pages to find the Practice Tests link.
Short Answer - Grade 8
Sample Question – Grade 5
X
How can you help your child in math?
• Know that the struggle is okay; it takes time to learn
things
• Praise the process
• Children need to take responsibility for their own
learning and their own struggle
• Guide children to resources that can help (textbooks,
notes, etc.)
• Value math homework-encourage children to do more
than just “get it done”
• Expand the focus beyond the grade
• Resist the very common temptation to explain the
struggle as genetic
Partners in your child’s future
• Hacienda La Puente Unified School District
is committed to ensure your child being
successful in Common Core State
Standards for Mathematics.
