Iago is able to manipulate others and influence their actions through his cunning and skill. He sows seeds of doubt in Othello's mind about Desdemona's fidelity by playing on Othello's jealousy and fatal flaw. Iago's motivations are his jealousy over being passed over for lieutenant and his hatred for Othello. He devises an intricate plan using racism, manipulation of others, and exploitation of weaknesses to bring about the downfall and tragedy of Othello, Desdemona, and Cassio for his own gain.
