How effective is the combination of your main product and your ancillary task?
Our thriller teaser trailer, film magazine front cover and film poster, work well together to create an effective cross media package; based upon the thriller genre. In order to get the products to link but yet have a distinctive individuality to each of them, we used ideas from our initial planning and research stage, our own ideas and audience feedback. To create one main genre, which all share similar codes of convention, style and theme; and can be related to each other.
The title of our film ‘BANE’ which means something which causes misery or a type of poison gave an insight into the films narrative; but yet added an element of mystery. Our narrative is about the antagonist trying to control the world; in our poster we used an image of the antagonist holding a globe, in order to relate it back to the narrative. In our magazine we used a low angle shot of the antagonist looking down at the audience, to emphasise superiority and control; but also involving them in the storyline. Our main product and the two ancillary tasks have many indistinguishably links between each other. The major one being the typography which links all three items, we used red inter-titles which were key feature throughout our texts, which we used to connote themes of control, illusion and suspense. Moreover, in our poster we used the tagline ‘The devils voice is so sweet’   which gives the impression that the antagonist is being controlled or influenced by his past experience; which is shown in the trailer during the bullying scenes.
Furthermore, the magazine front cover has the quote ‘bane takes over’ which relates to our narrative in the trailer of him taking over the world; it also adds mystery to our narrative and giving away too much of the story could be detrimental in our advertising effort. However, it also ties in to emphasise that this film will take over the cinema on its release; a technique that we hope would boost sales and attention. The antagonist is placed in the middle in both our ancillary tasks to create a sinister effect. In the magazine and poster the antagonist has an evil smile, which is slightly different to the scenes in our trailer. Even though it is different we feel all three products combine effectively in this case because we feel it foreshadows what may happen in the film but it also leaves the audience in suspense. Last but not least, we applied a dark image of our game as the background for both ancillary tasks, in order for it to work effectively with the trailers narrative. We got this idea from ‘The Matrix’ where codes for computer programming is used to create darkness and illusion; linked to the narrative. The sense of consistency and link between the three products helped our group in creating a good film campaign that the audience will be able to recognise and indentify with.
