An electromagnet works by passing a current of electricity through a coil of wire wrapped around an iron core such as a nail. The electricity from a battery creates a magnetic force around the nail when the wire is connected, allowing it to attract magnetic materials. Turning off the current by disconnecting the wire causes the magnetic force to cease.

Attaching the ends of the wire to the positive and negative sides of the battery will let the current of electricity pass through the wire to the nail. The electricity from the battery create a magnetic force around the nail and will allow it to pick up anything magnetic. The magnet can be turned of by disconnecting the wire.
