LEAD & LAG
DEFINITIONS, EXAMPLES AND
DIAGRAMS
Designed and Developed by https://www.pmbypm.com 1
AGENDA
• Definitions, Examples & Diagrammatic Representations
• Lead with 4 Types of Scheduling Relationships
• Lag with 4 Types of Scheduling Relationships
Designed and Developed by https://www.pmbypm.com 2
LEAD
• The amount of time whereby a successor activity can be
advanced with respect to a predecessor activity.
• Example
• In an Engineering Project, collection of requirement can LEAD creation of
design.
• In a Construction Project, interior finishing of a room will follow
plastering of walls.

REPRESENTATION OF LEAD
Designed and Developed by https://www.pmbypm.com 4
B(S) = A(F) – 1d
Example
Duration of A = 3 Days, Duration of B = 2 Days, Duration of Lead = n Days (nD)
The scheduled Start(S) of B is 1 day before (-1d) the scheduled Finish(F) of B

LAG
• The amount of time whereby a successor activity is required to
be delayed with respect to a predecessor activity.
• Example
• A – Lay ceiling for Floor I, B – Construct Columns for Floor II.
• A – Ship goods to a customer, B – Check if shipment has been delivered.
Designed and Developed by https://www.pmbypm.com 5
REPRESENTATION OF LAG
Designed and Developed by https://www.pmbypm.com 6
B(S) = A(F) + 1d
Example
Duration of A = 3 Days, Duration of B = 2 Days, Duration of Lag = n Days (nD)
The scheduled Start(S) of B is 1 day after (+1d) the scheduled Finish(F) of A
