How to write a literature revision? Prepared by: Prof. Noraida Domínguez Flores Librarian II Information Literacy and Technologies Program
Defining literature revision The literature revision is the part of your research paper where you present documents that have been published about your topic. In this section you need to demonstrate that you understand what research has been done about your topic.
Steps to prepare your literature revision Conduct a search about your topic Remember to use keywords of your topic to conduct the searches Remember to use the library online databases Locate different documents Try to locate primary and secondary documents Primary are Professional and Academic Journals Secondary are encyclopedias, dictionaries, and magazines.
Steps… After reading the documents, determine if they are adequate for your research. You should use: Journal articles Other research papers and Secondary sources Organize the documents, you can choose one of two ways:
How to organize the literature: Chronologically – you can choose to present and discuss the documents beginning with the more recent. By topic – you can identify sub-topics and divide the literature revision by sub-topics and present and discuss the documents of each topic. Example: If your topic is about Homosexual marriage, some sub-topics could be: Homosexuality Legal aspects of homosexual marriage Social aspects of homosexual marriage
Steps… Organize the documents Taking the subtopics presented as example on the previous slide, then the organization could be: Homosexuality Under this topic you can discuss all the articles you found about homosexuality in general. Legal aspects of homosexual marriage Under this topic you can discuss all the articles that present different perspectives about legal issues of homosexual marriage. Social aspects of homosexual marriage Under this topic you can discuss all the articles that present different perspectives about the effect of homosexual marriage in society.
Writing your literature revision: Remember that when you are writing your literature revision you need to discuss what other authors already published about your topic. Remember to cite following APA instructions. You can read every time you need the PowerPoint presentation about the APA manual.
Example of a literature revision
On the first paragraph of your literature revision you need to offer a brief description of your topic and explain what the literature revision will include.
Discuss each article. Always indicate who is the author of the article you are discussing, and the publication year of the article.
A research article is an article that presents a complete study. When discussing a study, it is important to discuss the following: what was the problem? Who participated on the study? What was the hypotheses? What were the results? What did the authors concluded?
When finishing the discussion of an article, start the discussion of another article.
Finishing your literature revision: After discussing all the documents you found about your topic it is important to: Discuss how the articles are related. Summarize your discussion and the ideas that you consider more relevant to your paper. Conclude by describing the importance of your topic and the importance of the research and other documents that have been published already.
