Unit 5 CAM Project
Lesson 3 Yoga Combined with Meditation Lecture
Lesson Summary: This lesson will focus on joining the two of Yoga and Meditation
together. Also how they complement each other body and mind.
Lesson Content:
Talk about the principles of Exercise. A 20 minute video complementing the talk
today ending with a breathing exercise.
Principles of YOGA
The first principle is exercise. There are four basic principles of Yoga but none of
them are going to work without meditation in some way. Yoga is a series of
postures as we now know created to improve strength, flexibility, and balance but
one cannot simply focus with meditation as an aspect; a clear mind that know how
to keep distractions at bay. As we concentrate on one part of the body, we are
sending blood flow to that area and therefor increased blood flow means the cells
receive more oxygen and assist the physical effects/benefits of yoga. But before
taking a pose that requires balance, an individual must focus the mind on one point
and then the ability to hold the pose depends on the individual’s ability to meditate
on that one point. A consistent practice can ease the muscles and allows more
flexibility. Not to mention that a yoga meditation is totally non-competitive and
nonjudgmental. Not only does meditation create a focus to enjoy what the body is
capable of but it also allows the mind to enjoy existence.
The second principal is relaxation. If you are relaxed in the muscles then this
will improve your flexibility, releasing tension stimulates the nervous system and
allows us a better body awareness.
The third is breathing. The correct yoga breathing expands and warms the lungs.
It allows you to control, Prana, or breath energy. It is important to a complete yoga
practice. And it is difficult to learn with a mind which is distracted.
The fourth is meditation and positive thinking. Meditation is basically the
clearing and focus of the mind, but it becomes the gateway for positive thinking. Yes,
even for the optimist, negative memories or fears exist. An optimist pays more
attention to the positive. Many think optimism is something we are born with. It can
be taught and be improved with little practice. Meditation is an exercise in moving
the negative thoughts out of the way and allowing positive thoughts to shine.
