IBM Lotus Notes / Domino Upgrading is the only way forward
IBM Lotus Notes / Domino – a history of upgrades The following slide does not attempt to trivialise the process of upgrading It can be a challenging, time-consuming and costly IT project However… IBM Lotus Domino has never mandated Switching hardware Deploying a new directory infrastructure Moving mail boxes from one server to another Migrating data from one format to another Typically customers have been able to skip versions when upgrading e.g. 5 to 7, 6 to 8 … and these are still straightforward upgrades
Notes / Domino - protection of investment Continued evolution + consistent architecture = Protection of investment Lower cost of ownership Shorter time to business value Future roadmap may be subject to change Upgrade Domino 5 Domino 6 Domino 7 Domino 8 Domino 8.5 Domino Beyond Upgrade Upgrade Upgrade Upgrade You can jump versions Co-existence between versions
Calling all Microsoft Exchange customers Ask Microsoft to show you THEIR version of that previous slide Make sure you ask them what’s next after Exchange 2007 … and if that will be a straightforward upgrade
IBM Lotus Notes / Domino – consistent architecture The Notes / Domino architecture has been consistent, release after release Does this mean things have got a bit stale? Absolutely not… Look at what’s been added or improved in the past five years (and what’s coming later in 2008) And this is based on a consistent upgrade-able architecture No migrations, no conversions, no rip ‘n’ replaces That saves time and money
Consistent architecture, continuous improvements Policy-based administration Scalability improvements 50 – 80% scalability improvements Reduced CPU usage Domain monitoring ~ 35% mail box and database compression Further reduction of CPU usage Reduction in I/O Traveler – integrated e-mail for mobile devices Reduction in space taken by file attachments Notes authentication via LDAP or Active Directory (optional) Notes ID credential vault Future roadmap may be subject to change 6 7 8.0.1 8.5
Quotes “ Within the land of IT, nothing is a bigger pain to own, manage and run than Microsoft Exchange. Everywhere you go customers have horror stories about the installation, maintenance and, above all, uptime of their Microsoft Exchange implementations. And worse yet, they will all tell you they are paying top dollar for the privilege because the expertise needed to successfully run a Microsoft Exchange server is some of the most expensive in the IT labor pool.” Michael Vizard, eWeek Even when the cost of the software licenses is factored out, upgrading from Exchange 2000 or 2003 to Exchange 2007 is significantly more difficult and expensive than the upgrade from Exchange 2000 to Exchange 2003. The two main reasons for this are Exchange 2007’s 64-bit requirement and the new message routing architecture. Peter Pawlak, “Exchange 2007 a Boon to IT”, Directions on Microsoft Update
