For this reason, Systems Director’s Status Manager includes a customizable Health Summary task for easy insight into system status. This single view or page consolidates other status views, such as the Scoreboard , a health summary by favorite groups, and a dashboard resource monitor. Together, these tools provide a single interface with which you can quickly view the status of important areas of your environment, monitor critical resources and view the contents of user-defined health summary groups. Monitoring IBM Systems Director m onitors systems in real time and critical thresholds can be set to notify administrators of emerging problems. Consolidation of problem status for hardware and threshold monitors is also included along with a dashboard to view thumbnails of live data monitors for critical managed resources. IBM Systems Director also supports monitors for virtual resources. Availability for a single management server is included via a “watchdog” feature to externally monitor the management server process and automatically restart it in the event that it is no longer active. Automation Plans Within IBM Systems Director event automation plans for a faster, more consistent management are supported. Using a simplified interface to trigger events automatically, such as e-mail notification or task execution, a common event schema enables easier management of heterogeneous environments. New commands for managing event automation plans, event actions, event filters and event logs support a broad variety of needs that include creating event-automation plans used to automate tasks and other responses to situations that occur in your environment, creating and managing event filters that allow the event automation plans to target specific events, creation of automation plans based on events and actions from virtual and physical resources, such as relocating a virtual server based on critical hardware alerts and automation plans based on events and actions from storage resources.

IBM Systems Director provides the foundation for managing servers at “no-charge”. It provides the primary tools our clients need to: discover and view hardware configurations monitor and alert on events make adjustments across multiple servers from a single console support simplified deployment, installation and update process Enables upward integration to enterprise service management IBM Systems Director can be configured to actively monitor for specific conditions such as hard drive space, CPU utilization, etc. and can also passively read the operating system log files and format messages as IBM Systems Director events. IBM Systems Director displays all alerts and events to its central console so operators can monitor the entire environment from one place and detect problems. You can get alerts that include hardware failures and system logs from HMC and associated operating systems. Monitoring of OS Metrics includes CPU and memory utilization (including Active Virtual Memory metrics), network, paging space, and file system metrics across hosts and virtual servers. You can also view CPU utilization metrics for environments that contain both shared and dedicated processors for both host and virtual servers and set alerts as required. IBM Systems Director allows you to see the Health and Status of Physical and Virtual Servers including the health of any Hardware Management Consoles (HMC) and Virtual I/O Servers (VIOS). In addition, Event Action Plans can be configured to execute when specific events are received or specific conditions are met. The actions can include notification such as a page or email or execution of a script to address the problem. This automation accelerates problem resolution and frees administrators from monitoring the console so they can work on more important issues.

• #28: IBM Systems Director ‘Tiered’ Agent Support Let’s take a look at the IBM Systems Director agents in more depth IBM Systems Director is designed to facilitate the best possible utilization of both storage-based and server-based physical and virtual resources throughout the infrastructure. In order to accomplish this task, the solution combines three main components: a single web-based console, a central management server and agents (either common or platform-based). In version 6.1, the following agent types are supported: Common Agent, Platform Agent, and Agent-less. Common Agent: The IBM Systems Director 6.1 Common Agent can optionally be used to replace the previous 5.x Level 2 Agent (though Director will continue to work with it, as well). This option will appeal to many administrators because the new agent supports a richer set of features and subagent tasks.
• #29: Platform Agent: The Platform Agent is well-suited to environments in which a smaller agent footprint is desired, yet one in which administrators wish to retain a broad array of features. It provides a subset of Common Agent functions used to communicate with and administer the managed system, including hardware alerts and status information. This agent provides discovery, authentication and management entirely through industry standards, such as the Common Information Model (CIM) and Web-based Enterprise Management (WBEM) interfaces, which were developed by a consortium of major hardware and software vendors (including IBM) called the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF). Agent-less Management: With Agent-less support , IBM Systems Director also provides a set of manageability functions for managed systems that have neither the Common Agent nor the Platform Agent installed. These systems with no Director Agent are best for environments that require very small footprints and are used for specific tasks, such as one-time inventory collection, firmware and driver updates and remote deployment. Systems without a Director Agent must support the Secure Shell (SSH), Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) protocol or SNMP in order for Systems Director to support them.
