Information Technology is beginning to have a
profound effect on the way the Built Environment is
planned, designed, procured, constructed and
operated.

Every second the global urban population grows by 2 people.
70% of the worlds population shall be urban by 2050.
500 Cities with populations of +1 million will be joined by 200 more in 20 Years
Leakage rates of 50% are not uncommon in urban water distribution systems
Cities consume two thirds of the World’s energy and contribute to
70% of its greenhouse gas emissions
On average, larger Cities produce more wealth and innovation per capita than
smaller ones.

“ICRI Cities will deliver research that
explores how technology can
enhance quality of life, create new
economic opportunities and
improve the environmental well
being of cities.”

HYDE PARK MONITORING
RESEARCH QUESTION:
Can we build scalable sensing systems that provide reliable coverage but
which lower costs by minimalizing fixed infrastructures required?
DUNCAN WILSON – INTEL ICRI CITIES – @DJDUNC – WWW.CITIES.IO - SUSTAINABLE CONNECTED CITIES
OVERVIEW OF DEPLOYMENT:
The work will focus on a number of research areas, such as data muling, topology controls and mule routing. It
will also have fixed sensing as part of the deployments.
TEAM:
Intel / Imperial /UCL – deployment of integrated sensor platform, data muling protocols, directed crowd sourcing
Neul – providing TV whitespace as alternative comms channel (for comparison with data muling)
Royal Parks Head of Ecology – for access to Hyde Park and as stakeholder in environment monitoring

60 YEAR CLOCK
FARADAY PROJECT, LEGO vs WORD, SENSE OF TIME
OVERVIEW
Project Distance offers every school in the UK the ability to measure and share
data in a way that
- helps to make science fun,
- links directly to the curriculum,
- helps to inform the design of the next generation of schools,
- incentivises UK businesses to enter a market worth £500 million a year and
- better prepares children to work within the digital economy.
We will do this by creating an information hub in the cloud using an open-source
and infinitely scalable API platform (Cosm). This will enable us to identify the mix
of incentives required to encourage educators, students and business to share
certain types of data openly for the first time.

FUTURE CITIES BUSINESS MODELS
IMPERIAL BUSINESS SCHOOL MBA
An alternate view of future cities through the eyes of entrepreneurs. Possible
outputs could be: an alternative framework for economic analysis; visions of
future commercial activity based on the trajectories being defined in the future
cities proposals; or an entrepreneurs reflection on the opportunities in future
cities.

  • #6: So why cities and why london – complexity diversity systems of systems – in london massive investment financially and politically – congestion, health, finance
  • #7: Our vision
  • #8: 3 guiding principles The key differentiator in our approach is - rather than mitigating unreliability we will embrace it. The city platforms of the future need to accept that data may be inaccurate due to lack of precision, or loss of calibration, and build systems that understand this and either overcome this problem or at least recognizes it exists and acts accordingly. Future platforms will require moving beyond existing central mission control systems to a more adaptive highly distributed environment that intelligently directs data from a variety of fixed, mobile and participatory sources, in the format required by each of the interested parties (e.g. utility managers, emergency services, road network maintenance). It will need to do so with a metric that indicates its trustworthiness so that the destination services know how to treat the data.
  • #9: Our research base is broadly split into three focus areas: Cyber Physical Systems- Directed Crowd Sourcing- Science of Behaviour Change
  • #10: We have 13 PhD’s and RA’sMore detail on individuals on website including an overview of everyones research
