This document discusses user interfaces (UIs) in first-person shooter (FPS) games. It examines early FPS games that separated the game world view from toolbars and status information. Later games in the 1990s integrated more of the UI directly into the game world for greater immersion. The document analyzes UIs in several modern games and identifies guidelines for good UI design, such as providing only relevant information and making all elements and interactions obvious to the player.
