Assessing ideas
Now you have generated lots of potential ideas, it is
time to rationalise those against the requirements of
the brief from your client.
Use the next few slides to consolidate your ideas and
then assess them against the requirements and
constraints of the project.
Finally, select an idea to take forward for further
development.
Idea 1
I think it would be really important to include
an age variety seen as though my client would
like to appeal to a wider audience and not just
people in their 30s. This would help because if
people saw others their age on the leaflets and
posters etc. then they would be more inclined
to ask Carley to be their personal trainer. For
me, however, it is quite difficult to find elders
because I only know one person willing to
participate and that is one of my friends.
Evaluation of idea
This idea has a consistent and appropriate colour scheme with colours that correlate
well with each other. The colours also link very in very well with the photographs,
although these images are only samples showing what I would like to do.
This doesn’t necessarily need to match the clients needs as she hasn’t specified any
particular ways of which I should go about this. However, this idea demonstrates
professionalism and coordination.
I think I would be able to easily achieve this as it all works together. I also don’t think it
would be much to do as I haven’t included too many colours and I have only planned
to stick to one typeface.
I think I will be able to achieve this on time as I have already arranged someone to
model for photographs and I have a pretty good idea of colour schemes and the like.
College provides the necessary resources such as cameras and a computer with
Photoshop installed. These are the only two things I need for production because
Photoshop will do most of the work.
Idea 2
I would like to make my pieces all look quite
uniform and to do so I will obviously have to follow
a colour scheme. However, I think that if I am going
to include text box or tags, they all need to be the
same colour so that it doesn’t look messy. There
are a few things that I have to criticize about this
because the text isn’t right and the colour isn’t the
most amazing. Honestly, I think this would be
better in a different colour scheme but I have used
the purple colour scheme to create this.
Evaluation of idea
I really like how well the colours go together and although they don’t say ‘relaxation’,
they are bold and exciting and could also be encouraging. I also really like the
photograph ideas, however, it’s a question of: how realistic would it be to achieve the
smoke effect, if at all. I’m not overly fond of the logo ideas but, I'm sure there is more
that I could do with this font.
I think the client will really like this scheme seen as though it is very exciting, vibrant
and encouraging. Also, it would be very attractive to the eye. However, I’m not sure
whether she wants exciting as it sets quite high standards for just one personal trainer.
I can easily use this colour scheme and the font to make an interesting piece. It’s more
the photographs which will be a struggle that will be the same for each of my ideas.
I can do this in good time so long as I have the necessary resources including a camera
and a computer. I think I might just struggle with the photographs and maybe some of
the writing.
Idea 3
I really like the idea of including some clipart or
Photoshop work, of my own, which would save
me a lot of time and effort in going out and taking
photographs. I think it will also save me from the
troubles of getting pictures off google images to
then be told off about it and potentially worse.
I think that this would be interesting and quite
easy to achieve as well because I could use other
existing pictures for inspiration and I could even
lightly base my designs off them. I would love to
do this because I can follow my colour scheme in
an interesting and experimental way.
I don’t think I will go as far as creating a sunny
background with trees and grass but rather I will
focus on the actual person who will be the
subject of the photograph. I might even just do
shapes based on trainers or leg movement/arm
movements.
Evaluation of idea
This idea is very warm, vibrant and inviting. I really like the colour scheme as I can do a
lot with it. Pinks and blues probably aren’t as easy to achieve, however, there is green
everywhere and it’s easily accessible. The font I chose for the logos also has a lot of
potential and I feel that I didn’t do a lot with it when experimenting on Photoshop.
I think this perfectly matches her ideals as it is very vibrant and attractive. Especially to
look at. Bright and sunny colours are also quite happy and so I think it will give people
the impression that Carley’s services are pleasant and fulfilling.
I feel that I can deliver something like this because it is more realistic for me to do.
Although there are facilities within college, not everything is suitable for what I need.
Just beyond college is plenty of public footpaths, grass areas and fields which follow
this colour scheme.
This can definitely be completed on time because, like I said, it is easier to achieve.
And so long as I have booked the camera with time to spare and arranged some
appropriate dates, then everything should go as planned.
A Photoshop supported computer and working camera is all I need.
Idea Evaluation
I haven’t firmly decided on one idea because there are a few parts from each idea that
I really like. I am still very much undecided on whether to take photographs, generate
my own pictures through Photoshop or do a bit of both. However, I think it would be
much easier and more convenient for me to work with Photoshop. This is because I
have consistent access to Photoshop, when I come into college. However, I don’t have
a lot of spare time outside of college. Booking camera equipment and taking it out
requires a lot of time I don’t have and effort to transport so it is something I will have
to consider.
I really like the idea of using the tags for first come, first serve offers and contact
details. I would definitely like to include at least one in a leaflet or on a poster of some
sort because it shows that what the pieces are intended for is advertising. I don’t
know whether I will use text boxes because they can either look really nice or really
bad.
I would like to use the blue colour scheme because it is quite warm but also relaxing. I
was strongly considering the green colours but I think they’re too overwhelming.
Development
Use the next slides to document your idea development.
This should include mood boards and other visual examples of work. It
could include basic mock ups of your vision for the project using the
work of others.
If you are taking doing something outside of your ordinary skill set or
way of working, you could include test work or practice work here too.
There is room to develop a second idea here as well. This could give
you a greater variety of options to give to your client.
You will then assess your developed idea against the constraints of the
project before producing a final treatment.
Developed Idea 1
Developed Idea 1
Developed Idea 2
Assessment of final ideas
Suitable for audience?
I think that the outcome will be suited to a wider audience, which is what I was going for originally. I think
I have chosen a sensible colour palette and I all the fonts are quite appropriate so it won’t matter which
one I choose.
Suitability for client?
I am hoping to create posters, business cards and leaflets. Those are for definite. However, I have
thought about other things such as handouts, free tokens and maybe even shop window ads. These are
all pretty similar and I think one or two posters would easily suffice. This will benefit my client as she has
a variety then and she can choose to post these ads in different areas or even when bumping into
someone, she can just pass them a business card.
Appeal of the work:
The work will hopefully stand out as a personal training advertisement with all the images/photographs. I
think people will be more interested in the smaller things such as business cards because they can put
them in their purse/wallet and will be reminded of them every time they go to pay.
Timescales for production:
My time is limited, however, I will be able to make something that will hopefully look professional and
made by a professional freelancer of some kind. Also, with the skills that I have learnt and the way my
design tastes have developed I will be able to create something that shows high quality.
Costs:
This won’t cost me anything as all the resources have been provided by college. I could ask someone to
model for my photographs and pay them but the project is meant to have no budget and is all supposed
to be done for free, which is why the client won’t have to pay anything.
Personnel:
At the moment, I am working independently and hoping to complete all my work on the computer. However, this
may chance in the circumstance that I decide to take photographs. This will affect the personnel as I will have an
extra person or maybe even an extra bunch of people working with me.
Assessment of final ideas
Legal and ethical issues:
I will have to be very careful when choosing how to advertise my clients business because I have to make sure
that everything is correct.
If I decided to write something about Carley’s personal training, which made her sound amazing but wasn’t
necessarily true, she could potentially get into trouble which means that I would also get into trouble. For
example, if it was advertised that you could ‘lose 1 stone in 6 weeks’ and that’s something Carley couldn’t achieve
for her clients then this could potentially be bad. This could result in Carley having to refund her clients and if it
were to get any worse, she could possibly be sued for false advertisement. Following from that, if I decided to use
false ratings to attract customers, that could also result in legal action being taken against me. This is because
people would be training with Carley under false impressions.
There are also other things that I would have to watch out for such as discrimination against a certain group of
people. This can easily be done simply by miswording something. This isn’t something I can think of off the top of
my head but it could be insulting to people who are technically overweight and are actually happy with their
bodies. So if I were to shame someone for being ‘fat’, that is something that might not be taken lightly.
Something that I don’t necessarily have to do but would be more beneficial to Carley’s business, is for me to
include people of colour in the adverts. This isn’t something that Carley would be sued for if she didn’t comply. It
just shows that her audience can consist of a wide variety of people. It could potentially be more encouraging to
people who are of colour because they know they will be welcomed as clients.
Research
Competition/Market research:
Who is in competition with your client?
My client is based in York and actually uses the facilities in a gym called 24/7 Fitness, located in Clifton Moor. Clifton
Moor is one of the most gym populated places and includes other big gyms such as PureGym and Roko. However,
PureGym is the most popular and is also the largest. Therefore the majority of personal training business happens
there. Because they are in the same location, my client has to compete with personal trainers and be the best. This
could also mean having to change her hourly rate which will effect everything. So I feel that I would be able to help by
making some attractive and top quality designs.
What is their design/photography/marketing/promotional/advertising work like?
My client hasn’t really done much work to advertise herself but she has made business cards and A5 cards previously.
She had them made with the intention of starting her own business so it had another name on it and already existing
pictures from the internet of weights and people exercising. She also liked the idea of anonymity and didn’t use
obvious pictures of people but more unfocused photographs which didn’t contain faces. She used a range of different
colours as well, which I didn’t really think worked too well. However, it was something she had to design herself with
her own design skills and using Microsoft office, which didn’t turn out too well. So I am going for a correlating colour
scheme consisting of blues because it applies a professional finish.
Audience/Customer research:
Who is the audience or customer that your client is trying to reach? Perhaps they have already told you. Perhaps you
should ask. You could also do further research in to the type of audience or customer you are hoping to appeal to.
Both me and my client have discussed and agreed that we would like to appeal to a large audience consisting of 18 to
65 years of age. We decided to draw the line at 65 because it can be difficult to train beyond that age.
Content research:
This should take the form of secondary research (exiting products from your client and the competition and wider
market) and also some primary research (asking potential audience, your client and your market,) to help you
formalise the content of your project.
Treatment
I will most definitely be making two pieces which include a leaflet and a business card.
My client has requested both of these things and so I must comply and make
something that is within her standards and follows her two wishes of which are to
make the work professional and presentable. Visually, I would like my work to appeal
the most to all potential clients. This is something I will be able to achieve by using
bright and bold colours. Pictures will also be a key element to attracting customers to
my client’s business. I would like to include some very simple pictures of people
exercising. However, these will be pictures that I have made on the computer. The
reason I am having to make images on the computer is because I can’t find a suitable
candidate/s to model for the photographs.
The colour scheme is going to be blue throughout, apart from the text and maybe
some of the blank white spaces. I will try and include as much blue into the images as
possible because otherwise they won’t fit in appropriately.
Treatment (visual elements)
Timescales:
Deadlines: The deadline for me to complete all my work is May 25th just before we break
up for half term.
Availability: n/a
Feedback: I will be presenting my work to my client during the half term and get the
necessary feedback that I should need during that time, which is plenty more than enough.
Resources: The only resources that I will be needing are in the classroom on the computer.
I would have needed a camera, had I decided to go out and take photographs, however,
this wasn’t a very convenient or realistic plan and so I am resorting to the use of
Photoshop. Things such as printing are up to my client. Once I have given her the finished
products, it is up to her to do as she pleases with them.

Clifton Moor is one of the most gym populated places and includes other big gyms such as PureGym and Roko. However, PureGym is the most popular and is also the largest. Therefore the majority of personal training business happens there. Because they are in the same location, my client has to compete with personal trainers and be the best. This could also mean having to change her hourly rate which will effect everything. So I feel that I would be able to help by making some attractive and top quality designs. What is their design/photography/marketing/promotional/advertising work like? My client hasn’t really done much work to advertise herself but she has made business cards and A5 cards previously. She had them made with the intention of starting her own business so it had another name on it and already existing pictures from the internet of weights and people exercising. She also liked the idea of anonymity and didn’t use obvious pictures of people but more unfocused photographs which didn’t contain faces. She used a range of different colours as well, which I didn’t really think worked too well. However, it was something she had to design herself with her own design skills and using Microsoft office, which didn’t turn out too well. So I am going for a correlating colour scheme consisting of blues because it applies a professional finish.
  • 23. Audience/Customer research: Who is the audience or customer that your client is trying to reach? Perhaps they have already told you. Perhaps you should ask. You could also do further research in to the type of audience or customer you are hoping to appeal to. Both me and my client have discussed and agreed that we would like to appeal to a large audience consisting of 18 to 65 years of age. We decided to draw the line at 65 because it can be difficult to train beyond that age.
  • 24. Content research: This should take the form of secondary research (exiting products from your client and the competition and wider market) and also some primary research (asking potential audience, your client and your market,) to help you formalise the content of your project.
  • 25. Treatment I will most definitely be making two pieces which include a leaflet and a business card. My client has requested both of these things and so I must comply and make something that is within her standards and follows her two wishes of which are to make the work professional and presentable. Visually, I would like my work to appeal the most to all potential clients. This is something I will be able to achieve by using bright and bold colours. Pictures will also be a key element to attracting customers to my client’s business. I would like to include some very simple pictures of people exercising. However, these will be pictures that I have made on the computer. The reason I am having to make images on the computer is because I can’t find a suitable candidate/s to model for the photographs. The colour scheme is going to be blue throughout, apart from the text and maybe some of the blank white spaces. I will try and include as much blue into the images as possible because otherwise they won’t fit in appropriately.
  • 27. Timescales: Deadlines: The deadline for me to complete all my work is May 25th just before we break up for half term. Availability: n/a Feedback: I will be presenting my work to my client during the half term and get the necessary feedback that I should need during that time, which is plenty more than enough. Resources: The only resources that I will be needing are in the classroom on the computer. I would have needed a camera, had I decided to go out and take photographs, however, this wasn’t a very convenient or realistic plan and so I am resorting to the use of Photoshop. Things such as printing are up to my client. Once I have given her the finished products, it is up to her to do as she pleases with them.
