WHAT IS REUSABLE
LEARNING CONTENT?
ENTERPRISE KNOWLEDGE
ENTERPRISE KNOWLEDGE
What is it not?
COPY AND PASTE
Copying Text and Pasting it somewhere else is not
actually reuse. When you copy and paste the
connection between the original text and the new
text is severed.
ENTERPRISE KNOWLEDGE
What is it?
Modules, assets, and learning objects that are
designed in such a way that they can be reused
across different types of learning experiences,
with different audiences, and/or within different
instructional materials or formats. The content
and all of the places it lives are either the same or
derived from the same digital object; in the case of
the same digital object, if you need to update the
content, those changes go everywhere.
ENTERPRISE KNOWLEDGE
Comparison
Copy/Paste
Duplicate copies are made and
must be maintained over time
Reuse
Core learning objects are
managed once and distributed
to many
ENTERPRISE KNOWLEDGE
Check for Understanding
You’re offering a webinar about information security to
employees and you create two versions of the webinar
slides.
● In the version for software engineers, you use more
technical language.
● In the version for business leaders, you use less
technical “plain language” for the same concepts.
Is this an example of Reusable Learning Content?
Why or why not?

Reusable Learning Content: The Steps

ENTERPRISE KNOWLEDGE
Step 1: Identifying your reusable content
✔ Is this content role specific?
If this information is only relevant to some learners but
not others it’s a likely candidate for being a separate
“building block.”
✔ Is this content task or
competency specific?
Example: An activity specific to the performance
assessment of a task could be useful in any context that
task is discussed (in-app help, course, technical
documentation, etc)
✔ Will this content need to change
across varied “assemblies” and
publications?
If you need this in the facilitator’s guide, but not the
slides, it’s a likely candidate for being a separate “building
block.”
✔ Is the content required for every
delivery channel or only some?
If this content could be contextualized in formal learning
in your LMS or in performance support in your Intranet
it’s a strong “building block” candidate.
✔ Is the content is high value?
Scenario-based learning content which is “mission
critical” to a desired learning or performance outcome.
ENTERPRISE KNOWLEDGE
Instructional content which explains the steps to
monitoring project budgets and projecting budget
overages.
Project budgets are monitored by both project managers
and finance officers, although the specific steps they take
to monitor project budgets vary as they have access to
different systems and information.
Check for Understanding
Is this a good candidate for being its own “building block”?
Why or why not?

Reusable Learning Content: Use Case
Enterprise Knowledge has developed a new Philanthropic Partners policy which provide
employees with the opportunity to engage in paid volunteer time. Financial support is
also provided to approved philanthropic partners.
The process for how to apply this new policy varies by role:
⬢ Individual contributors
⬢ HR Managers
Information about this policy will be available for employees in the following channels:
● In an eLearning module available during employee orientation and onboarding
● On the corporate intranet, SeEK.
Enterprise Knowledge has developed a text blurb with the key information about the
policy and needs your help to transform it into structured content so that it can be
reused in both channels and personalized to meet role-based needs.
ENTERPRISE KNOWLEDGE
Unstructured Content Example
To continue our long-term commitment to our community and the world, Enterprise Knowledge
provides the opportunity for employees to use Paid Volunteer Time to support this approved
philanthropic partners who’s mission aligns with EK’s philanthropic priorities and six guiding
principles. If you wish to volunteer individually with a philanthropic partner, submit your Paid
Volunteer Time request to your HR manager. You may contribute 8 hours of Paid Volunteer Time
per quarter. Paid Volunteer Time requests shall follow standard PTO request processes. Whenever
possible, at least two weeks of notice should be provided for approval of a leave request so the
company and client’s needs can be adequately assessed. Before approving Paid Volunteer Time,
HR managers should confirm with employee’s project managers that no client or project work is
negatively impacted. HR managers shall approve Paid Volunteer Time requests in the timekeeping
system following standard PTO request processes. As an HR manager, if you wish to coordinate a
group volunteer day with your team, submit a Team Volunteer Time request to any Leadership
Team member. Each employee on your team may contribute 8 hours of Paid Volunteer Time per
quarter, so individual Paid Volunteer Time requests must be balanced with Team Volunteer Time.
After Paid Volunteer time, employees who have volunteered individually are encouraged to share
updates about their experience in the #ek-funstuff Slack channel. After Team Volunteer Time, HR
Managers must provide a status report of participants and engagement to the HR Director, as well
as posting about the team experience in the #ek-funstuff Slack channel. For more information
about this policy, please contact the HR Director. To submit a potential philanthropic partner for
inclusion in the approved philanthropic partner list, see any EK Leadership Team member.

Points to Remember
⬢ Making copies of content solves a short term problem
(differentiated instruction) but long term it creates a
content maintenance burden.
⬢ To Get Started: Conduct a content audit to identify reuse
opportunity
⬢ How much of your content is duplicate content? Calculate
from that - How much does one change cost?
⬢ Where have you opted out of differentiated instruction
because it’s too difficult?
