‘ PARIVARTAN’ A story of change from : J.H. Tarapore School, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. Sannidhya Srivastava, Faizan Tarique, Ankur Chakroboraty, Somil Ansal, Atul Kumar Mentor Teacher: Mrs. Rashmee Bhatia
I:\plastic free\SayNo2PlasticBags-2.jpg We are all aware of the ill effects of polythene, inspite of that it is being used on a massive scale. What troubled us was the sight of drains clogged with polythene bags, animal chewing it, etc. and people around indifferent towards it. STEP 1: FEEL
GOING OUT We spoke to the shopkeepers. According to them people do not carry bags from home while coming for shopping, so they provide goods in polythene.
Keeping this in mind, it was decided that we will take a proactive approach to this problem by targeting our immediate surroundings by providing the shopkeepers with an alternative to polythene. Hence, we decided to make paper bags and jute bags on a large scale and distribute them among the shop keepers, free of cost. On the other hand, tell the shopkeepers to ask their customers to bring cloth bags from home. STEP 2: IMAGINE
WHY USE PAPER AND JUTE BAGS? Environment friendly Recyclable Affordable Best use of waste
Students of Std. VI – Std. VIII made bags out of newspaper. Std. IX – Std. X made beautiful jute bags with sacks. STEP 3: DO
A rally was taken out by the students where they not only emphasized on not using polythene but also encouraged the shopkeepers and public in general to use paper and jute bags.
Simultaneously, the paper bags and jute bags were distributed among the shopkeepers. Out of the 50 shop keepers about 20 of them have reduced their consumption by 5%. Banners made by the students were given to the shopkeepers, to constantly remind the customers to say ‘No to Polythene.’
Students convincing the shopkeepers to believe in their ‘design for change’ in the society.
HOW WE WERE CHANGED? We learnt that where there is a will, there is a way. A small initiative taken by us, over a period of time can bring about a big change.
From the Principal Just like drops of water make an ocean ,with the support of our faculty and other stakeholders’ we wish to make this an ongoing movement into a global change. Mrs. Lata Sharat Radiating ripples……… to make a difference
