Editor's Notes

  • #2: Key Talking Points The paper was written with minimal amount of time. The paper was a follow up of a similar paper published in 2010.
  • #3: Key Talking Points TOKI was started as an initiative from individuals since mid 1990s which then started gaining full support from government since early 2000s. TOKI’s goal is not only IOI medals, it is to actually introduce informatics through competitions. TOKI itself is not a formal entity, it is more of a name of a community.
  • #4: Key Talking Points Huge area and population. Uneven development especially in education and technology. Java is central, the west is generally more developed compared to the east.
  • #5: Key Talking Points Lack of interest in science. Shortage on teachers with informatics skills. TOKI has very limited part-time voluntary organizers.
  • #6: Key Talking Points More traction and spotlight in science. Informatics competition are trending and cool. As of June 2014: ~10 local competitions annually, ~15k users in tokilearning.org, ~15k members in facebook.
  • #7: Key Talking Points Five provinces newly unlocked: Aceh, Riau Islands, Lampung, Babel Islands, East Kalimantan. The ones went to IOI still come from 8 provinces, no changes in the past 4 years. The west is still generally more unlocked compared to the east.
  • #8: Key Talking Points We believe gold is still a mistery. We are confident in achieving full four medals every year. We observe our process is able to nurture smart students into at least bronze medalist.
  • #9: Key Talking Points (TOKI) Alumni: directly handle the selections and trainings, and prepares their materials. (TOKI Bureaus) Universities: maintain the curriculum, facilitating and directing the alumni and responsible for the contents and provide judges for selection purposes. Government (Ministry of National Education): provides and manages national budget to conduct selections and training as well as to provide scholarships for winners. Multi-tiered competition and some limits on numbers of participants from each school/municipal/province as to allow further gap reduction between provinces.
  • #10: Key Talking Points Problems are getting more competitive every year. Non-programming problems are mixed with intelligence quotient test problems to unleash pure potential of participants. National selection format is now IOI-like programming with the existence of some open subtasks which cases can be downloaded to be solved manually.
  • #11: Key Talking Points Training Camp 1 & 2 is full of basic competencies for IOI. Training Camp 3 is there to answer the challenge of new modern tasks in IOI. Training Camp 4 is more of practice, practice, and practice.
  • #12: Key Talking Points New system consists of interchangeable components to fulfill all kinds of operational purposes. New interface with intuitive navigation and multiple languages open to public. Further details: “Components and Architectural Design” paper.
  • #13: Key Talking Points Formal entity established in 2012. Tasks distribution through proper organization structure. Regular serious as well as casual gathering, be it general or specific to certain batch or region.
  • #14: Key Talking Points We will continue whatever worked in the past. Here are some new initiatives.
  • #15: Key Talking Points “Challenges” turned into “Advancements” driven by “Efforts”. Any questions?
