Integration of ICT
in Education
Hello!I am Joanne Villis. This presentation was created
for Wing K.Au,Ph.D, Senior Lecturer, University
of South Australia. I presented this PowerPoint
to first year University students in April, 2017.
The presentation is based on a document I
created which covers the Australian Curriculum
Digital Technologies Scope and Sequence For
Reception to Year 6. The document can be
downloaded from: Inter-Tech Education.

How I teach…
Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4fCJCbI1wE
1. Data (representing, managing, analysing)
2. Digital systems (understanding, using)
3. Algorithms
4. Information systems (how and why people
use them)
5. Safety and ethical use online
I’ve broken the Australian Digital Technologies
curriculum into 5 main concepts/topics:
Digital Technologies
The following slides are suggestions for learning
activities to teach data, digital systems, algorithms,
information systems and safety/ethics.
Each learning idea has been allocated a recommended
year level.
Teaching Ideas
Data (R-Y2)
- Begin by collecting, sorting and representing
data
- Microsoft Word, creating a list of items,
inserting a table
- Graphic software (ie TuxPaint, KidPix) or Apps
to create picture graphs
- Explore symbols that represent data. For
example, an email address has a name
followed by an @ symbol followed by type of
name.
Data (Y3-Y4)
- Syncing devices with OneDrive and
folder set up (don’t use USB)
- Backing up data (ie MineCraft -
%appdata%)
- Customising icons, start menu, desk top
- Installing own programs (application
catalogue)
Data (Y3-Y4)
Explore cells,
columns, rows
(Pixel art)
Data into
spreadsheet
and
generate
graph
Headings,
labels,
auto sum
Image Data (Y3-Y4)
- File extensions .jpg and .png
- Royalty free image websites (ie pixabay.com,
pics4learning.com) and download size
- Zooming in on images
Image Data (Y3-Y4)
Compare computer game images
Data (Y5-Y6)
Data (Y5-Y6)
Data (Y5-Y6)
- Recognise the difference between
numerical, text and date formats in
spreadsheets
- Use functions to make arithmetic
calculations using multiple cells and
summing cell ranges
- Integrate this with Financial Maths
Sound Data (Y5-Y6)
- Integrate with Media Arts
Listen: Student work sample:
QR Data (Y5-Y6)
QR codes or quick response codes stemed
mainly from the desire to incorporate more
data into barcodes. Regular barcodes can
only contain data in one direction-
horizontally. QR codes contain information
both horizontally and vertically. This leads to
them sometimes being called ‘matrix codes,”
or “2D codes.” Compared to the 20 digits of
information a barcode can store, a QR code
can store up to 7,089 digits.
QR Data (Y5-Y6)
- Students investigate how they work
- How to create QR codes
- For what purposes might they be useful?
- Ask students to create their own codes for
a particular purpose
- http://www.createqrcodes.org/
Acquiring Data (Y5-Y6)
- Filtering and performing queries using
advance searches
- Explore different search engines, there is
more out there and Google!
- Gogogooligans, KidRex, Boolify,
Duckduckgo, Instagrok
Managing Data (Y5-Y6)
- Investigate viruses and malware, what
are they?
- Create an infomercial/jingle about what
they learnt (ie Windows Media Player)
Digital Systems (R-Y2)
- Students explore why do we use types of
technologies? Students pick a
technology and describe what it is used
for.
- Computer room visits and class set of
iPads.
Digital Systems (R-Y2)
What is a mouse? Main problem we see
today with Junior Primary classes…
http://www.abcya.com/counting_sorting_com
paring.htm
Digital Systems (R-Y2)
- Name and explain the function of a mouse, touch
pad, touch screen, Interactive TV, keyboard and
stylus.
- Practice logging on and off personal computer. Use
different pathways to access and open selected
software (class SharePoint, school newsletter,
emails).
- Look at other technologies such as robots (linked to
coding).
Digital Systems (Y3-Y4)
- Windows Surface Pro 4
- Office 365
Digital Systems (Y5-Y6)
Students explore the inside parts and
functions of a computer (PSU, CPU, GPU,
RAM, motherboard, hard drive, expansion
slots, expansion cards). Students can re-
create the parts of a computer and label the
parts using drawing software, hard materials
(boxes, crafts), or by drawing.
https://regmedia.co.uk/2013/02/14/surface_all_large.jpg
Digital Systems (Y5-Y6)
- Explore how the Internet works and search
engines
- Domain suffixes (ie .com, .edu, .org, .gov)
- Click view is a good resource for teaching
this
Algorithms (R-Y2)
Too many resources to go through all of them.
My favourites:
Algorithms (Y3-Y4)
Too many resources to go through all of them.
My favourites:
Algorithms/Gaming (Y5-Y6)
Too many resources to go through all of them.

How to teach digital technologies in the Primary years
Information Systems(R-Y2)
What is communication? How do you
communicate? How do your parents or older
siblings communicate? How do teachers
communicate through the school?
Ask students how and why do we share
Information? Who do we share
information with? When would we need
to share information? Note: The following video
is not used during class ;)
Information Systems(R-Y2)
How have information
systems changed overtime?
Students might interview
family members about how
they communicated when
younger or visit the museum
and investigate? How did
Indigenous Australians
traditionally communicate?
Information Systems(Y3-Y4)
- Visit your local museum and or library and
record different types of technology being
used.
- What is the function of the technology?
- How does the technology assist the users?
Information Systems(Y3-Y4)
Students use Microsoft Forms to survey classes about their use
of their school library e-books, online reservations and or self
borrowing systems.
Information Systems(Y5-Y6)
Students investigate and use sustainable
solutions (SharePoint and OneDrive).
How to teach digital technologies in the Primary years
Information Systems(Y5-Y6)
Touch Screens
- What are they and how do they work?
- How and where are they used in our
environment? ie supermarket, train station,
shopping centre, airport etc.
- How might they help users?
- What happens when systems which people
rely on break? Next slide 
Information Systems(Y5-Y6)
-Investigate GPS (global tracking systems)
- Pokemon Go: Students research and explore
how Pokémon Go works. Why has it been such a
big success?
Safety/ethics (R-Y2)
- ABCYA.com Cyber Five
- How to close a pop up video.
- Log in, passwords
- Hectors World
Safety/ethics (Y3-Y4)
- My Online Neighbourhood LINK
- Kim and Lee LINK
- Cyber Pigs LINK
- Digital Citizenship
- Online Referencing Generator
Safety/ethics (Y5-Y6)
- Copyright, creative
commons and licencing
- Social media surveys,
rules and regulations
- Digital footprint,
creating digital content
- Netiquette
- Plagiarism
- Royalty free sites for
images and music
