A closer look at SMEs
The apprenticeship levy
How can your business be prepared?
Rationale for Reforms
Employer Driven
Employers designing
apprenticeships to make
them more responsive to
their needs and the future
economy, and controlling
funding
Simplicity
Simplifying apprenticeship
standards so that they are
shorter and more accessible
Quality
Improving the quality of
apprenticeships so that
they are viewed with the
same esteem as University
The Apprenticeship Landscape
• Developed by Employers
• Linked to an occupation
• Skills Coach led
• Based on skills for the job
• Learning modules
• Very uniform frameworks
• ‘tick boxing’ exercise to pass
assessments
• Limited additional content
able to add on
• Job skills and blended
learning
• Third party assessment
• Opportunity to enhance and
build on the standard with
relevant training and skills
• Developed by Government
• Linked to a general area
• Assessor led
• Based on ‘checking
achievements’
• Limited skills and job focus
• Employer led (Institute of
Apprenticeships)
• Focus on appropriate skills
for your business
• Address skills gaps in the
UK and integrate L&D
programmes
• Can be used on existing
staff and new recruits
• Bespoke programmes
• Build in and integrate a
complete L&D portfolio
