Innovation Learning Lab The project improves the quality of innovation collaboration between SMEs and Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SUAS) Is based on a view of open innovation  Duration of project:  2009-2012  Is funded by European Regional Development Fund
Project background Innovativeness is the most important single factor that has an effect on companies’ competitiveness. To be successful, companies need open innovation, such as, new, external ideas, resources for development and channels for commercialisation Higher education organisations and SMEs need to develop their collaboration and ICT tools further in order to benefit more from open innovation.  Higher education organisations need to bring elements of innovation in the education process and develop learning environments further Teachers need to familiarise themselves with management of innovation, including customer-based open innovation
Goals Developing innovation collaboration between SMEs and Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SUAS) Developing innovation learning environment in SUAS Setting up an innovation learning lab in SUAS as an experimentation space Testing of new models of innovation in collaboration with SMEs Developing new ICT tools for innovation collaboration Connecting to virtual innovation environments Creating an innovation lab that may be used for innovation collaboration and experimentation with SMEs even after the project
View to Innovation ICT combined with other core competencies Interaction between teachers, students and SMEs Piloting innovative collaboration models Learning by developing and experimenting
List of actions 1. Setting up the  lab as a space for innovation 2. Study of SUAS’ existing methods and benchmarking them against others 3. Organisation of expert seminars and workshops  4. Interviewing companies and entrepreneurs, demonstrations 5.  Developing and taking up ICT tools for innovation management 6. Investing in equipment that helps with achieving the set goals 7. Organisation of strategy and innovation sessions  8. Research and forecasts to support innovation 9.  Testing models by piloting them with partners 10.Connecting to supporting virtual innovation environments 11.Description and development of the best models 12.Dissemination of results
Collaboration with regional SMEs Demonstrations and experimenting with technologies  Small feasibility studies with new technology Research hotel  Idea development sessions Project planning Pilot projects and other forms of activities to enable students to connect themselves SME innovation processes and to test new forms of collaboration Seminars and workshops for learning new ways to innovate and for dissemination of results
Sustainability of the results Best practices will be implemented and applied in innovation interaction between SUAS and SMEs during and after the project Collaboration models will be developed further after the project and they will be used in project-based studies in SUAS Results will be transferred into teaching  Students and staff may use the Innovation Learning Lab after the project The Open source software, which is created during the project, will continue to be subject to further development by other players in the field
