The Innovation Learning Lab project aims to improve innovation collaboration between small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SUAS) in Finland from 2009-2012 using an open innovation approach. The goals are to develop innovation learning environments at SUAS, set up an innovation lab as an experimentation space, test new models of collaboration with SMEs, and develop new ICT tools to connect students and businesses. Outcomes include applying best practices in SUAS-SME innovation interaction and collaboration models beyond the project.

- 2. Project background Innovativeness is the most important single factor that has an effect on companies’ competitiveness. To be successful, companies need open innovation, such as, new, external ideas, resources for development and channels for commercialisation Higher education organisations and SMEs need to develop their collaboration and ICT tools further in order to benefit more from open innovation. Higher education organisations need to bring elements of innovation in the education process and develop learning environments further Teachers need to familiarise themselves with management of innovation, including customer-based open innovation

Sustainability of the results Best practices will be implemented and applied in innovation interaction between SUAS and SMEs during and after the project Collaboration models will be developed further after the project and they will be used in project-based studies in SUAS Results will be transferred into teaching Students and staff may use the Innovation Learning Lab after the project The Open source software, which is created during the project, will continue to be subject to further development by other players in the field
