This document presents an intelligent wireless street lighting system using Zigbee technology. The proposed system uses sensor-enabled lampposts that can monitor lighting conditions and activate/deactivate individual street lights as needed. A base station monitors all lampposts for faults. This creates an efficient automated system that reduces energy waste and makes fault detection easy through wireless communication. The system uses low-power Zigbee transmitters, receivers and PIC microcontrollers in each lamppost. Simulation results and hardware prototypes are presented. The intelligent lighting system is expected to increase reliability and efficiency by 30% over traditional wired systems.
