• Contact tracing apps: IoT has also been used to develop contact tracing apps. These apps utilise
Bluetooth technology to track when two people with the app are in close proximity to one another.
• Medical record keeping: The Internet of Things helps doctors streamline patient medical records
and access, making real-time data available where and when it’s needed.
• Monitor blood sugar levels accurately: Continuous glucose monitors (CGM), like Dexcom and
Medtronic, monitor a patient’s blood sugar levels and sends the data to their smartphone or a
display device. This data can be used to make informed decisions about the patient’s diet, insulin
dosage, and exercise. It can also be used to detect trends and patterns over time.
• Upgraded pharmaceutical manufacturing: Pharmaceutical manufacturing is being optimised by IoT
as well. Tracking production in real-time means that issues can be caught and resolved quickly,
preventing costly delays (but more on that later).
5 The Internet of Services and The
Industrial Internet
While digital transformation has been on the agenda for many years, in 2020 it went from a five or ten-
year initiative to an overnight imperative.23
To remain competitive in today’s fast-changing markets,
companies need to first digitize manual processes with electronic data capture, then digitalize more
holistically – take that captured data, turn it into useful information, then share it across the enterprise.
This digital transformation not only minimizes wasted work and increases resiliency, but also, by placing the
customer at the heart of the business, enables new value creation and growth opportunities.
There is a reason, of course, every business hasn’t accomplished its digital transformation already: it’s
easier said than done. Gartner24
2 reports that digital transformation takes twice as long and costs twice
as much as most companies anticipate. 70% of digital transformation projects either stall or fall short of

When analyzing the potential costs, keep in mind that each case ought to be studied individually. If you do
not have a lot of knowledge and experience in this topic, consult an experienced technology partner who will
be able to suggest a solution tailored to the needs, abilities, and specificity of a given organization.
5. Difficulties with integrating existing systems with IoT In order for the entire ecosystem of devices
connected to the IoT to function properly, it must be appropriately configured and integrated with the
systems your company uses. This can be complicated, especially when using legacy systems.
In this case, the answer is to create a dedicated IoT solution that will be designed and tailored to your
company’s systems.
6. Issues with storing data generated by IoT sensors
Another thing that can prevent you from implementing IoT solutions in the industrial sector is issues related
to data storage. Do you have the right tools and servers to store all the data generated by industrial IoT
devices? In fact, most corporate information today is stored in cloud computing, which not only enables you
to store huge data sets but also ensures greater security. Cloud technologies are becoming more and more
popular, but this is not the only solution available on the market. It is also worth noting the increase in
popularity of edge computing, a method of storing data and mass storage directly in the place where it is
generated (e.g., industrial IoT devices or their controllers). According to the latest report by Deloitte, as many
as 72% of IT leaders already use this technology.

6.1 Smart manufacturing trends for 202527
Smart factory trends for 2025 are focused on recovery and the “new normal,” to be sure, but they are also
building on developments and advances in technology that have long been in the works — independent of
what may have been going on in the world at large. These smart manufacturing trends include:
