Courtyard Modeling Project
Modeling Geometric Shapes
Recollections from Observational Drawing
What were some of the architectural features you noticed when drawing?
What basic shapes made up the walls?
What is the focal point of the courtyard? What shapes made up the porch?
What was the hardest part of putting the courtyard on paper?
What were some repetitions you saw in the courtyard? (Multiple of the same thing)
Problem:
You are working for the school district to
create an online immersion experience for
parents of potential students. You must create
a 3D model of an assigned area of the building.
What should you include in your model and
how will you go about re-creating something
from real life in 3D space?
State Standards Addressed:
● I can distinguish between and use the components of 3-D
animation software programs such as cast, score,
environment, the X-Y-Z coordinate system, and the
animation manipulation interface;
● I can apply texture, transparency, skinning, and contour
along a 3-D object surface;
State Standards Addressed (cont.):
● I can distinguish between and use the different 3-D
modeling techniques such as box modeling (single cube
modeling), transformation (move, rotate, scale), and
polygon primitives using extrusion and rotation;
● I can critique original 3-D digital artwork, portfolios, and
products with peers.
Objective:
Students will practice basic modeling skills while re-creating a
familiar area of architecture.
Maya skills applied include:
● Moving, Rotating, and Scaling Objects
● Moving the camera around the space
● Generating and manipulating Polygon primitives
● Extruding, Grouping and Duplicating Objects
● Applying basic color textures using materials

  • #3: What do the sidewalks look like from above? What is in the courtyard to sit on? What types of plant life were there? Are there other objects in the courtyard?
