Intro to Art

- 2. THE COURSE : A lecture course covering the major art trends and their place in history, art media and technique, criteria for evaluating plastic art and its relationship to other arts.
- 3. LEARNING OUTCOMES: -The student will gain insights into the question of “why man creates?” -The student will gain an understanding of the different media used to create a work of art and the processes utilized in their creation. -The student will develop a formal and contextual vocabulary to be able to distinguish, identify and analyze the art styles that were produced in the context of culture throughout history. -The student will be able to visually identify works of art based on the style or time frame in which they were created.
- 4. COURSE ASSESSMENT: Attendance: If the student is absent more than 3 three classes over the course of the semester their grade will be lowered by one letter, NO EXCEPTIONS. Class starts at 10:00AM sharp . Exams: These will be found on the Internet and are usually a combination of true/false, multiple choice, fill in the blanks, and short essays. -The student will also be responsible for slide identification in class. -The eight quizzes will count as 100 points each for a total of 800 points. -The slide identification will count as 100 points. The student will be responsible for bringing scantron computer testing answer sheets to the slide identification portion of the quizzes. These scantron sheets can be purchased in the bookstore. -The dialog portion of the course will account for a total of 100 points

GRADING SYSTEM Exams = 800 points Slide identification = 100 points Weekly forum response = 100 points Total points = 1000 points divide total score by ten to achieve your final grade A = 90 – 100 B = 80 – 89 C = 70 – 79 D = 60 – 69 F = below 60 Extra Credit - critiques of art exhibitions will be given out over the semester and are worth up to 10 additional points each toward your final grade.
- 6. INTERNET This semester we will be using an internet program called MOODLE to create dialog with each other about course content and to take quizzes from a revolving bank of questions. This site can be found at http//rifkowitz.unlocklearning.net I will give you instructions for signing up on Friday. You will all need an internet connection to complete this part of the course. You must give me a copy of your user name. Please print your name and user name on the sign up sheet being passed around

- 11. This Friday we will meet at the ISLA Center for the ARTs in Deans Circle at UOG. We are going there to view the work of the UOG faculty (mine included). Bring a notebook and an open mind. See you there at 10:00AM sharp Friday January 25, 2008
- 12. For Monday please bring a scantron form to class. This can be purchased at the bookstore. You will need (9) nine scantron forms for the semester.
