- 1. Sentence Diagramming<br />Identification of parts of a sentence by using a diagram
- 2. Subjects- ALWAYS going to be a NOUN or PRONOUN; the subject is what the sentence is about; the subject PERFORMS the action in the sentence
- 3. Your mom is cool.
- 4. The dog ate the cow.
- 5. Predicates- ALWAYS going to be a VERB; the predicate is what is being done in the sentence; the subject performs the PREDICATE
- 6. I got a giant ladder and went to the moon.
- 7. The cow jumped over the moon.
- 8. Adjectives- describe NOUNS; adjectives tell what kind, how many, which one, etc.
- 9. The little mouse ate ten cargo planes in one bite.
- 10. The majestic lion ate the deer.
- 11. Compound Subjects and Compound Predicates
- 12. Compound= 2 or more
- 13. Compound subjects have 2 or more subjects.
- 14. Compound predicates have 2 or more predicates.
- 15. Maria and Jim slept.
- 16. The boys and the girls ran.
- 17. Cara jumped and hopped.
- 18. Bunnies and kangaroos eat and hop.
- 19. Predicate Adjectives and Predicate Nouns

- 22. smell- Your perfume smells sweet.
- 23. look- Audrey looks weird.
- 24. taste- Apple pie tastes delicious.
- 25. feel- I feel disgusted.
- 26. appear- I appeared happy at school.
- 27. are- Are you ready?
- 28. been- Have you ever been silly?
- 29. was- Was that a pig?
- 30. become- You can become a superstar.

- 34. be- Be a cockroach.
- 35. were- We were animals.
- 36. seem- You seem angry.
- 37. Adverbs
- 38. A word that modifies a verb, adjective, or other adverb. Adverbs tell you how, when, where, and to what extent something is being done.
- 39. HOW: I baked a cake quickly. (verb)
- 40. WHEN: I baked a cake yesterday. (verb)
- 41. WHERE: I baked a cake here. (verb)
- 42. TO WHAT EXTENT: I baked a cake very quickly. (adverb)
- 43. I baked a very good cake. (adjective)
- 44. *Adverbs usually end in LY.
- 45. Direct Objects
- 46. A direct object is either a noun or pronoun.
- 47. A direct object receives the action in the sentences.
- 48. A sentence must have a transitive verb in order to have a direct object.
- 49. If there is an intransitive or linking verb, there is NO direct object.
- 51. Find the predicate.
- 52. Ask yourself who/what is receiving the action in the sentence OR the subject does what?Examples:<br />I baked a cake for his birthday. (Cake is receiving the action of BAKING.)<br />Will you buy me a pony? (Pony is receiving the action of BUYING.)<br />Take the books to your teacher. (Books are receiving the action of TAKING.)<br />Indirect Objects<br />You cannot have an indirect object without a transitive verb.
- 53. There will be NO indirect object if there is no direct object.
- 54. An indirect object is a noun/pronoun that is being affected by the action in the sentence.Ask yourself:<br />What is the subject?
- 55. What is the predicate?
- 56. What is the direct object?
- 57. Who or what is being affected by the action?A sentence with an indirect object will always follow this pattern:<br />S - subject<br />P - predicate<br />I – indirect object<br />D – direct object<br />Examples: <br />Julia sings her friend a song.<br />Justin Bieber gave Kyle his liver.<br />Michael Jackson sent a homeless person Kyle.<br />Prepositional Phrases<br />Preposition + (modifiers) object of a preposition = prepositional phrase<br />Prepositional phrases will never contain the predicate, subject, direct object, nor direct object in the sentence.Preposition- a word that shows a relationship between a noun/pronoun and another word in the sentence.<br />Usually one short wordObject of a preposition- a noun/pronoun that follows a preposition<br />Can be compound
