Critical infrastructure needs precise timing for rapid failure
localization and efficient operation of distributed control processes
Our industry requires better timing
Replication of data in globally dispersed data centers and synchronization
of distributed processes requires tight timing
Precise timing is essential for highly efficient radio access network and
accurate localization in mobile networks
Both transactional service in finance and security
applications depend on trustworthy and precise time
Technical innovation and new regulations call for precise synchronization

Use case – finance: the problem
Legacy NTP is not accurate enough

Finance venue NTP server
Public network
Financial markets need to accurately timestamp transaction records
• Legacy Network Time
Protocol (NTP) typically
achieves 1-10ms accuracy
• Now µs accuracy is required
by governmental bodies
such as RTS25/MiFID II (EU)
or FINRA rules (US)
• Reporting granularity is
moving to ns resolution,
more stringent accuracy
requirements will follow

For high-precision timing, NTP needs to be replaced by PTP
• PTP features physical timestamping on interface, advanced algorithms, on-path support
• Application-specific PTP profiles define implementation and performance
• PTP achieves 100ns accuracy with HW implementation and a few µs with SW

Improving timing with PTP delivery and NTP/PTP client or PTP software clock
• Legacy packet networks can
be used for PTP delivery
• Enterprise appliances
frequently support NTP
• Solution:
• Colocated NTP/PTP gateway
• PTP software clock
• Alternatively: colocated HW
clock

OSA SoftSyncTM specifications
• Software PTP client/slave for highly precise timing
• PTP slave clock with enterprise and PTP default profiles (IPv4 & IPv6)
• PTP master (G.8265.1) clock for accuracy testing
• BMCA between up to four remote masters
• Proven synchronization assurance solution
• Most cost-efficient route to precise timing
• Supported by 86 hosts running Linux (tested with Linux Centos and
RedHat Enterprise OS)
• Support for HW and SW timestamping:
• Automatic detection of available timestamping technique
• HW timestamping for variety of NICs (tested with the NICs based on Intel
x722, Intel i350 and Intel 82599ES Ethernet controllers)
• Expected time recovery accuracy in the tens of ns with HW timestamping
(depending on NIC’s oscillator, timestamping accuracy and network PTP
awareness), typically better than 10us with SW timestamping
• Web GUI (HTTP/HTTPS) , CLI and SNMPv2/v3 management interfaces
• System infrastructure including users' management, alarms, logging
• Support for gNMI-based telemetry
