Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology
What is Anatomy?
The study of the structure of the human body and its parts.
Types of Anatomy:
• Gross Anatomy: Large structures visible to the naked eye.
• Microscopic Anatomy: Cellular and tissue level (Cytology & Histology).
• Developmental Anatomy: Structural changes over a lifespan.
Why Lab Technicians Need Anatomy:
To identify body structures during diagnostics and lab procedures.
Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology
What is Physiology?
The study of how the body and its parts function.
Types of Physiology:
• Cellular Physiology
• Systemic Physiology (e.g., respiratory, cardiovascular)
• Pathophysiology (study of diseases).
Importance for Lab Technicians: To understand normal vs abnormal
body functions for effective diagnostics.
Anatomy vs. Physiology
Anatomy: Structure.
Physiology: Function.
Example:
•Anatomy of the heart: Chambers, valves, and blood vessels.
•Physiology of the heart: Pumping blood to supply oxygen and nutrients.
Why Study Anatomy and Physiology?
• To understand the human body in health and disease.
• Basis for diagnostics and lab work.
• Helps in effective communication with healthcare professionals.
Applications in Lab Work
Examples:
•Microscopic Anatomy: Examining blood smears and tissue slides.
•Physiology: Interpreting lab results related to organ function tests (e.g., liver enzymes, kidney function tests).
•Practical Skills:
•Identification of abnormalities in samples.
