Key Observations:
"If we teach today's students as we did
yesterday's, we are robbing them of tomorrow."
                 John Dewey.
We are currently
  preparing students for
     jobs that don’t yet
exist...using technologies
     that haven’t been
   invented...in order to
 solve problems we don’t
even know are problems
            yet.

     Richard Riley

What is Mobile Technology?
It Looks Like...
It is not...
When is an iPad the Best Choice?

When used as just another tool

                                Younger Students

When embedded in a larger lesson

When time is limited On location

Collaboration is important Students with Special Needs
                 Differentiated Instruction is Needed

   Multimedia is a Key Component
Practical Tips for
   Implementation
Cover them
Clone them
Device-based email
iCloud
2 students using 1 iPad
Printing and document management
Wireless screen sharing
Dealing with
Documents
    On the iPad
Where did they go?

Over the past 25 years we have gone from
physical documents that resided in one place,
to digital documents that could be duplicated
and sent effortlessly around the world to
cloud documents that reside in one place but
can be accessed from around the world.
Cloud Storage

5 GB 2 GB 7 GB 5 GB
DropBox: 50GB for $9.99/month
  ($99.99/year); 100GB for $19.99/
       month ($199.99/year).

Google Drive: 25GB for $2.49/month;
 100GB for $4.99/month; 200GB for
  $9.99/month; more options from
              Google.
Demonstration

• Install DropBox on your main
  computer...then install on your mobile
  device (iPad)
• Place a file in DropBox on the computer.
Open it on your Mobile Device. Attempt to
edit it and save back to DropBox.
Classroom Application

• Quick and easy file transfer to and from
  students.
• Students need not email documents, just
place in a folder shared with teacher
• Can be tricky with some programs so test
it and go with what works.
Demonstration

• Teacher places a file in her DropBox Public
folder and emails the link to her students
(alternately makes a QR Code for the link)
• Students open it, edit it and send back using
email OR directly to Teacher’s DropBox
  using AirDropper.
Demonstration

• Teacher gets students to create their own
dropbox accounts. Then they share a folder
with the teacher. This folder shows up in
the teacher’s dropbox account. This is a
  direct connection between teacher and
  student (real time changes).

Experiencing Mobile Technology for Yourself

Lesson Four: Beginner Researchers
Once students have gathered information and media,
they can use tools to sort it, evaluate it and finally
present their learning in an effective way.
Experiencing Mobile Technology for Yourself

Lesson Five: Present Your Knowledge
Your assignment is to choose one of the following Final Product tools to create a
presentation related to a topic you are currently covering in your classroom.
Keynote: Presentation of 3 slides minimum Pages: Brochure or Poster
iMovie: 30 second video Toontastic: A narrated animation

A Few More Things...

Publishing
 Moving files back and forth:
Dropbox: same account (simple) or unique for each
   device.
iCloud: same account needed. Potentially confusing if
   too many on 1 account
eMail: works well for documents but not for multi-media
   projects
Wifi connection (WebDav): requires someone to set up a
computer to act as a server.
 Publishing:
Posterous.com - email your projects here
   Vimeo.com
   YouTube.com
Many apps have their own publishing options. Some
   have nominal fees.
