What is PROFIBUS?
PROFIBUS DP and PROFIBUS PA
PROFIBUS DP (Decentraliced Periphery)is mainly used for high
speed input/output devices and to link intelligent devices such as
drives. It can use different physical layers such as RS-485,
wireless or fiber optics. RS-485 is the most common one.
PROFIBUS PA (Process Automation) refers to the following
additional features:
Bus powered by using the Manchester encoded Bus Powered
(MBP) physical layer according to IEC 61158-2

During commissioning, maintenance, or when an error occurs, it
is necessary to obtain an overview of the plant or machine
status in minimum time. The integrated PROFINET diagnostics
allow you to quickly call up the exact plant and machine
information you need – and no engineering tool is needed. This
ensures constantly high availability.

How PROFINET works

With PROFIenergy, PI was the first organization to develop an
energy management profile. Besides the acquisition of
energy data, the main feature of PROFIenergy is its ability to
easily switch off portions of machines and plants in a
controlled manner during pause intervals. This enables energy
savings of up to 60%.
