• MAC/PHY well aligned with current small cell multi-vendor FAPI – Functional
Application Platform Interface
• PDCP split also has potential, as some benefits are available with no transport
cost increase
• Standardization of a transportable interface for the chosen split will establish
a scalable ecosystem with interchangeability of remote and centralized parts
from different suppliers – requires the development of a IP network
transportable version of FAPI, or nFAPI
Release 5.1: Key findings
Announcement: Release identifies a clear opportunity to support an
accelerated industry transition to virtualized small cells with a
virtualized FAPI (nFAPI) based on a MAC/PHY split.

Editor's Notes

  • #8: HetNet is critical and “the shape of future networks”: requires small cells but not just small cells C-RAN/SDN/NFV is another industry-wide transition  WiFi is essential part of this too – our integration efforts to date underline this, but with Hotspot 2.0, and WiFi calling it’s starting to impact still further DAS acknowledged valuable tool for larger enterprises and in combination with SC/WiFi in, for example, stadium deployments And, of course, macro is not going away: getting richer & more sophisticated, acting as master nodes for slave cells etc
  • #9: Our current work already reflects this reality. NOW is the right time to make it explicit. We have taken direction from carrier members who want to avoid a fragmented approach to HetNet evolution. SCF well positioned to coordinate Liaisons with WBA on unlicensed, ETSI NFV, NGMN 5G We need the industry to support us in this endeavor – it’s in all our interests. Support through membership and greater engagement – support through more and deeper partnership with industry organizations.
  • #10: Many operators have a roadmap to centralising and virtualising their macro RAN, and need to see how small cells will integrate into this. In other words, NOT having a clear position on virtualization turned out to be a hidden barrier to widescale deployment
  • #11: During 2014-15 the SCF responded to carrier demands with a study item analyzing the costs and benefits of different approaches. The main aim of the study is to quantify costs and benefits of different ‘functional splits’ and find the sweet spot.
  • #12: A MAC/PHY split brings most of the benefits of centralization, with only a small increase in transport performance and cost.
  • #13: Release program continuing to bring down deployment barriers. OVER 10K DOWNLOADS! This is what the virtualization theme covers: [160] Functional Splits: describes the different functional split options, benefits available for each, and their transport requirements [161] Capacity and coverage: quantifies centralisation benefits of the different splits [158] Business Case: Quantifies TCO increase in the urban scenario based on transport costs of different functional splits [161] Network Aspects: Describes the wider system impacts of small cell virtualisation [106] Pulls it all together into a concise overview Small Cells and Unlicensed Spectrum – sibling rivalry but ultimately the same family: There are a range of ways in which operators can leverage unlicensed spectrum to enhance their service offering, including Carrier Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Calling and now LAA. We consider the pros and cons of these in our new paper on small cells and unlicensed spectrum [097] as well as our paper on LAA [094] The SCF’s contribution to the definition of 5G: While the industry still questions what 5G will be, one thing that everyone agrees on is that it will comprise a dense network of small cells. SCF will contribute to the process of 5G definition ensuring that the resulting technology is practical and is supported by a healthy and competitive ecosystem, as we describe in our new paper [SCF055]
  • #15: Addressing our missing – Driving the wide-scale adoption of small cells and accelerating the delivery of integrated HetNets. Roadmap: Operators want to see a roadmap for the evolution path of small cells into future networks. This includes our work on Virtualisation and C-RAN, as well as License Exempt spectrum and 5G evolution.
  • #16: JOIN US TODAY!!
  • #17: Talk about regional groups Advocacy: A big part of our work going forward is about sharing best practice learnings from leading vendors and operators. Our recent ‘state of the market’ workshop included commercial demonstrations of a number of technology maturity proof points: Technology commercialisation proof points include: 1. Live commercial HetNets in urban and enterprise demonstrating small cells interworking with macro and DAS from other vendors. 2. Multivendor macro/small cell with SON in both dedicated and shared carriers. 3. Multi-operator small cells sold directly to a building owner who recognised essentiality of good mobile coverage for tenants. 4. LAA integrated into small cells in pre-commercial demonstration of peak rate to over 600Mbps 5. Rural and remote small cells in Japan working over satellite backhaul
