Lymphatic System
The lymphatic system is a vital part of the body's immune defenses,

Functions of the Lymphatic System
1 Immune Response

immune cells, such as
lymphocytes, that detect and
neutralize threats like pathogens,
bacteria, and viruses.
2 Fluid Balance
The lymphatic system helps
maintain fluid balance by collecting
excess fluid and waste products
from the body's tissues and
returning them to the bloodstream
for filtration and elimination.
3 Fat Absorption
The lymphatic system plays a
crucial role in the absorption and
transport of fats and fat-soluble
vitamins from the digestive
system, ensuring their distribution
throughout the body.
4 Detoxification
The lymphatic system filters out
waste, toxins, and other harmful
substances, helping to cleanse the
body and support overall health
and well-being.
Lymph Vessels and Lymph Nodes
Lymph Vessels
The lymphatic system is composed
of a vast network of thin, delicate
vessels that transport lymph fluid
throughout the body. These vessels
collect and transport excess fluid,
waste, and other materials from
the body's tissues to the lymph
nodes and the circulatory system.
Lymph Nodes
Lymph nodes are small, bean-
shaped organs located along the
lymph vessels. They act as filtration
systems, trapping and removing
harmful substances, pathogens,
and waste from the lymph fluid as
it passes through. Lymph nodes
also house a variety of immune
cells that help fight off infections
and diseases.
Lymphatic Circulation
The lymph fluid, which contains

lymphatic vessels and is
continuously circulated throughout
the body, allowing the immune
system to monitor for and respond
to potential threats.

1 Lymph Formation
Lymph fluid is formed from the interstitial fluid that surrounds the
body's cells, which is collected by the lymphatic capillaries and
transported through the lymphatic vessels.
2 Lymph Transport
The lymph fluid flows through the lymphatic vessels, which are
equipped with one-way valves to ensure the proper direction of lymph

3 Lymph Filtration

Immune Cells in the Lymphatic
System
Lymphocytes
Lymphocytes, including T cells and B
cells, are the primary immune cells found
in the lymphatic system. They play a

responding to threats, such as infections
and diseases.
Macrophages
Macrophages are large immune cells that
engulf and digest harmful pathogens,
cellular debris, and other foreign
substances, helping to protect the body
from infection and disease.
Dendritic Cells
Dendritic cells are specialized antigen-
presenting cells that play a crucial role in
activating and stimulating the adaptive
immune response, helping the body
mount an effective defense against
threats.
Natural Killer Cells
Natural killer cells are a type of
lymphocyte that can directly attack and
destroy infected or cancerous cells,
making them an important part of the
body's innate immune response.
