 The quality of nursing practice depends on the quality
of knowledge learned. Thus one needs to ask about the
sources, the quality and credibility of new knowledge
in nursing.
 Tradition
It include beliefs that are based on
customs and past trends
 Reasoning
It is the processing and organizing the idea in order
to reach logical conclusions
 Authority
An authority is a person with
expertise and power who is
able to influence opinion and behavior, and he
knows more in a given area than others
 Role Modeling
It learning by imitating
the behaviors of an expert.
 Borrowing
It involves the use of knowledge
from other fields
 Scientific research
It is the source of accurate
scientific information
 Trial and error
It is an approach with unknown
outcomes that is used in a situation
of uncertainty, in which other sources of knowledge
are unavailable.
 Personal experience
It involves gaining knowledge
by being personally involved in
an event, situation, or circumstance
 Word research mean search again or to examine
carefully.
 Research is active, systematic inquiry or investigation
to
 validate and refine existing knowledge
 generate new knowledge.
 It is a controlled , systemic investigations that are
rooted in objective reality and aim to develop
general knowledge about natural phenomena
 It is a scientific process that validates and refines
existing knowledge and generates new knowledge
to develop the body of knowledge that directly or
indirectly influences nursing practice.
 Through nursing research, scientific knowledge
can be developed, refined and extended to improve
 nursing care
 patient outcomes
 the health care delivery system.
 Nurses need scientific knowledge to improve their
decision making regarding
 what care give to patients
 and how to implement that care
1. Basic research ; is undertaken to extend the
base of knowledge on a topic, or to formulate or
refine a theory
Examples :
 A study looking at how caffeine
consumption impacts the brain
 A study assessing whether men or
women are more likely to suffer from
depression
2. Applied research; focuses on finding solutions
to existing problems
 Examples:
 Theory of self-care deficit
 Theory of acute pain management
1. Order and systemization
In scientific study the researcher
moves in an orderly and
systematic fashion.
2. Control
Involves imposing condition on the
research situation so that
biases are minimized.
3. Empirical evidence
It is comes from objective reality
and gathered directly or indirectly
by human senses. It is not based
on personal beliefs
4. Generalization
The ability to go beyond the specifies of the situation
to broad, general circumstances.
1. Description
2. Exploration
3. Explanation
4. Prediction
5. Control
1. Description
Description involves identifying the nature
and Characteristics of nursing phenomena
Example: study describe the complains of
women during normal pregnancy.
2. Exploration
Aimed at exploring the dimensions of
the phenomenon and the other factors
which it is related
Example: Student’s acceptance toward
methods of evaluation .
3. Explanation
In explanation, the relationships among phenomena are
clarified and reasons why certain events occur are
identified.
Example: study the relationships between prolonged bed
rest and the patient’s skin integrity (why prolonged bed
rest correlated with bed sours )
4. Prediction
Through prediction, one can estimate the probability of
a specific outcome in a given situation
Example: study the effect of weather
changes on the rate of respiratory
infections during childhood
5. Control
Control mean manipulate the situation to produce the
desired outcome.
Example: study the effect of health
education program on the nurse’s
attitude toward patients with Aids.
