IS TIME TRAVEL
POSSIBLE?

What is Time Travel?
• Time travel is the hypothetical activity of travelling into
the past or future.
• Time travel is a widely recognized concept in philosophy
and fiction, particularly science fiction.
• In fiction, time travel is typically achieved through the use
of a hypothetical device known as a time machine.
Einstein's Thoughts
on Time Travel
• In 1915, Einstein discovered his General Theory of Relativity,
giving us a different view of time.
• For example, time beats faster on the moon and slower on
Jupiter than on the Earth.
• He found that if the universe rotated, and you travelled around
the universe fast enough, you could go back in time, and arrive
before you left.
IS TIME TRAVEL POSSIBLE
Stephen Hawking’s
Thoughts on Time
Travel
• According to Stephen Hawking, time travel is possible, and not
just in the way we might think.
• Backward time travel is not supported by Hawking’s theories,
because new matter would need to be created – one existing in
the past and one in the present, traveling back in time.
• However, time travel to the future is possible if gravity warps the
space-time continuum.
• Time goes faster in regions with less gravitational force, as
described by the principle of gravitational time dilation in
Einstein's general relativity theory
Grandfather
Paradox
• One famous thought experiment related to time travel is the "grandfather
paradox.“
• It hypothesizes that if time travel were possible, one could potentially go
back in time and change the course of history, like preventing one's
grandparents from meeting. This creates logical contradictions and
paradoxes that challenge the feasibility of time travel.
• The grandfather paradox is just one example of the types of paradoxes and
logical conundrums that can arise when contemplating time travel.
• It highlights the complex and often contradictory nature of time travel
scenarios in which changes in the past can have profound effects on the
present and future.
IS TIME TRAVEL POSSIBLE
Wormholes
IS TIME TRAVEL POSSIBLE
• Wormholes are thought to be shortcuts through spacetime, allowing one to
traverse vast distances or even jump between different periods in time.
• They are often depicted as having two ends, with one end located in the
past or future and the other end in the present or at a different location.
• A wormhole is a tunnel-like connection or shortcut between two separate
points in spacetime.
• While they are theoretically allowed by the equations of general relativity,
their practicality and existence in the real universe remain unproven.
