MODES OF
INFORMATION
The means of communica-tion help us to send
our messages and ideas from one place to
another. In the modern world the means of
communica-tion have become very important. In
old days it was very difficult to send our
messages and receive messages from far off
places. This sending and receiving of messages
and ideas is known as communication. In
modern times we can communicate with far off
places easily and quickly. The means of
transportation and the means of communication
are closely related. They are inter-dependant.
The following are the main means of
communication.
• POSTS AND TELEGRAPHS
TELEPHONE
RADIO AND TELEVISION
TELEX
FAX, PAGERS, EMAIL
NEWSPAPERS
CINEMA
KIOSK
Various modes are…..
• The Government of India has a depart-ment of
Posts and Telegraphs. It has thousands of post
offices all over the country. The postal
department carries our mail, money orders
and parcels to all parts of India and the world
and delivers it to our friends and relatives for
whom they are meant. The mail is sent by
road, rail or air. The Post and Telegraph
Department is the second biggest department
of the Central Government. The big cities have
night post offices and mobile post offices. The
mobile post offices move to different parts of
the city at fixed hours. Letters are the cheapest
means of communication
1..Posts and Telegraphs
• In some of the larger cities, there are special
letter boxes marked QMS, meaning Quick Mail
Service. From here letters reach faster but only
if the address contains a PIN CODE NUMBER.
This code number is different for different areas
of a village, town or city.
• Now-a-days, a special type of fast postal service
has been introduced by the post office called
SPEED POST. Another kind of service, called
COURIER SERVICE is used by people to send
their letters and parcels. We send urgent
messages in telegrams through the Telegraph
Department. Our telegrams can reach various
places within a few hours.
Contd…..
• Telephone is another quick means of
communication. It is a great improvement over the
telegraphs. The people who live far away can talk to
one another as if they are sitting face to face.
• Direct dialing system has been started in most of the
cities and some villages in the country. - It is known
as S.r.O. (Subscribers Trunk Dialing). You have to
dial a Code No. allotted to a town and talk to a
person on phone anywhere in India or in some other
country of the world.
• Telephones are connected by wires known as cables.
Now we have telephones which are not connected by
cables. They can work within a certain range from
the telephone connection. These are called Cordless
phones. This type of phone can be carried by a
person in a car, or even if he / she go for a walk,
2…TELEPHONE
• Radio, television and the newspaper are mass-
communicating media. Through these means we can
communicate with thousands of people. There is a
number of radio stations in the country. These
stations broadcast radio programmes. It broadcasts
news, music, plays, stories, agriculture information,
speeches, advertisement and other important
announcements.
• Another very important means of communication is
the television which provides news, information,
education, music and entertainment to people.
• The difference in radio and television is that it uses
moving pictures to convey the message. Almost every
home has a radio and television set. They bring us
useful information about the latest events in the
country and the world.
3...RADIO AND TELEVISION
• Both radio and television give us weather
reports, timings of arrival and departure of
trains and flights and special urgent bulletins.
• Recently, another system of communi-cation has
become very popular in cities. It is called the
CABLE TV, In this the video films are shown for
the entertainment of the viewers.
• Different channels show different programmes.
Some of the most popular channels are - Star,
Zee, EL, SUN, BBC, Star Plus, Discovery, Zee
Cinema, ATN and so on. Through these channels
very interesting and' informative programmes
from all over the world can be seen.
CONTD…..
•The Telephone Department also
has a 7"e/ex service through
which typed messages can be
sent very quickly. This method
is often used by offices, airlines,
Government offices and
newspaper offices.
4…TELEX
• Fox sends 'Facsimile' of a printed message or
picture to another machine located anywhere
in any part of the world. It makes use of the
telephone lines. The message is displayed on
the screen. E-Mail uses computers connecting
by ordinary telephone line. Electronic mo/7
card send messages to any part of the world
through computers
5…FAX, EMAIL
• Newspapers, magazines and books are
a good means of mass-communication.
This is a print medium which travels
far and wide. The newspapers have a
very wide circulation and every literate
person tries to go through them. They
bring us the latest news, rates of the
commodities, advertisements,
employment news, matrimonial and
many other information.
6… NEWSPAPERS
• Cinema is also a means Of mass communication.
Almost every town has a cinema hall. Besides
recreation, cinema is also of a great educational
value. The Government has a number of mobile
cinema vans. It arranges cinema shows in the
rural areas and shows a number of documentary
films regarding its policies and programmes.
During the recent years television has gained
more popularity over the cinema as means of
mass-communication. In addition to the above
there are some other means of communication.
Hoardings and Bill-boards are sued by the
Government and the Advertisers to
communicate the public.
7…CINEMA
• In information technology, a kiosk
(pronounced KEE-ahsk) is a small physical
structure (often including a computer and a
display screen) that displays information for
people walking by. Kiosks are common near the
entrances of shopping malls in North America
where they provide shoppers with directions.
Kiosks are also used at trade shows and
professional conferences. The word is of Turkish
and earlier Persian origin, where it meant an
outdoor pavilion or a portico. The kiosks best
known to travelers are those that display show and
movie posters on the streets of Paris.
8…KIOSK
• an information system on the Internet which
allows documents to be connected to other
documents by hypertext links, enabling the
user to search for information by moving from
one document to another.
• With a web browser, one can view web
pages that may contain text, images, videos,
and other multimedia and navigate between
them via hyperlinks.
• A technical definition of the World Wide Web
is: all the resources and users on the Internet
that are using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol
(HTTP).
…..www(world wide web)
• The Internet is a worldwide collection
of networks that links millions of businesses,
government offices, educational institutions, and
individuals. Data is transferred over the Internet
using servers, which are computers that manage
network resources and provide centralized storage
areas, and clients, which are computers that can
access the contents of the storage areas. The data
travels over communications lines. Each computer
or device on a communications line has a numeric
address called an IP (Internet protocol) address, the
text version of which is called a domain name. Every
time you specify a domain name, a DNS (domain
name system) server translates the domain name
into its associated IP address, so data can route to
the correct computer.
…..Internet
• You can access the Internet through an Internet service
provider, an online service provider, or a wireless service
provider. An Internet service provider (ISP) provides
temporary Internet connections to individuals and
companies. An online service provider (OSP) also supplies
Internet access, in addition to a variety of special content
and services. A wireless service provider (WSP) provides
wireless Internet access to users with wireless modems or
Web-enabled handheld computers or devices.
• Employees and students often connect to the Internet
through a business or school network that connects to a
service provider. For home or small business users, dial-up
access provides an easy and inexpensive way to connect to
the Internet. With dial-up access, you use a computer, a
modem, and a regular telephone line to dial into an ISP or
OSP. Some home and small business users opt for newer,
high-speed technologies. DSL (digital subscriber line)
provides high-speed connections over a regular copper
telephone line. A cable modem provides high-speed Internet
connections through a cable television network.
Ways to access Internet
• A variety of services are used widely on the Internet,
including e-mail, FTP, newsgroups and message boards,
mailing lists, chat rooms, and instant messaging. E-
mail(electronic mail) is the transmission of messages and
files via a computer network. You use an e-mail program to
create, send, receive, forward, store, print, and delete
messages.
• FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is an Internet standard that
allows you to upload and download files with other
computers on the Internet. An FTP server is a computer that
allows you to use FTP to upload files to, and download files
from, an FTP site. With anonymous FTP, anyone can
transfer some, if not all, available files. A newsgroup is an
online area in which users conduct written discussions about
a particular subject. The computer that stores and distributes
newsgroup messages is called a news server. You use a
program called a newsreader to access a newsgroup, read
previously entered messages (called articles), and add
