This document discusses problem-based learning and the role of the facilitator. It provides an overview of the steps in problem-based learning which include encountering the problem, defining learning goals, self-directed study, sharing learning with the group, and summarizing learning. The facilitator guides the learning process by modeling good learning strategies, continually monitoring discussion, and fading support as students gain experience. Effective facilitators encourage critical evaluation, question clinical reasoning, and allow students to control the learning process. Skills for facilitators include eliciting, prompting, refocusing, facilitating, evaluating, summarizing, and giving feedback. Challenges include resisting the temptation to lecture and relinquishing control to students.
