Characteristics of a Goal

                      • Specific

A goal is a desired • Measurable

                           capacity to reach your goals
                      • Realistic
Key Word: o An objective toward which you are both willing and
  Commitment able to work
                      • Time-bound
                         o Grounded with a time-frame

                                                                                     6
Why You Need to Set Goals

• To give clarity to your vision
     – More often than not your vision becomes clearer as you put it down in
       writing
• Gives you laser focus
     – Focus brings blindness to distractions
• Makes you accountable
     – Goals make you obligated to do much more than just ‘talk’
• Helps you make the best use of time
     – You can determine the end of one task and the beginning of another
• Helps you achieve your highest potential
     – You could uncover potential that you didn’t know existed
• Helps you get the best out of life

                                                                               7
Easy Steps to Setting & Achieving Goals

1. Decide what you want
   I. Think about what you want
II. Make a decision about what you really want
   III. Be specific

2. Start small, but keep walking
   I. Break your ‘dream’ down into smaller more manageable parts
II. If it is too large it may seem daunting and unattainable
III. Don’t be overwhelmed and give up
IV. Small set backs are more manageable than larger ones
   V. Set day to day goals
VI. Make them adaptable (circumstances may stall your plans but should
           not completely stop them)

                                                                                8
Easy Steps to Setting & Achieving Goals…

3. Be specific
   I. Set times, dates, amounts, or limits for your goals
II. Use specific words instead of ‘lots, more, many’

3. Be positive when stating your goals
   I. Goals are always things you want, not things you don’t want
II. State them in a positive way e.g. ‘I don’t want to fail my class’ should be
‘I want to pass my class’ or ‘I want a B in my class’

3. Don’t underestimate yourself
   I. Don’t set goals below your capacity to deliver. The fear of failure is
sometimes to blame for setting our goals too low

                                                                                   9
Easy Steps to Setting & Achieving Goals…

6. Write it down
   I. A written list is an effective reminder of what you need to do
II. Good review of your accomplishment
III. Good for tracking your progress and to re-strategize if necessary
IV. Confirms a willingness to make it true
   V. Make a vision board

6. Remember that some fears are unfounded.
   I. How do you know you’ll actually ruin it? And how do you know for sure
your co-workers will laugh at your effort?
II. F.E.A.R - False Evidence Appearing Real
III. Face your fears by critically analysing your thoughts on the matter

6. Prioritise
   I. You cannot do too many things at a time
                                                                              10
Goal Gone Wild!!! – Goal Setting Mistakes

Goal setting can go wrong for the following reasons:
• Goals are set unrealistically high.
     – When a goal is perceived to be unreachable, no effort will be made to achieve it.

• Goals are set so low that you feel no challenge or benefit in achieving the
    goal.
     – You begin to feel that setting goals has been a waste of time.

• Goals are so vague that they are useless.
     – It is difficult to know when vague goals have been achieved.

• Goal Setting is unsystematic, sporadic and disorganized.
     – In this case certain goals will be forgotten

• Too many goals that aren’t given priority may be set, leading to a feeling of
    overload.
     – Remember that you deserve time to relax and enjoy being alive and not solely
focused on your goals and achievements.

                                                                                           11
Time Management
Time Management

• Time is the point or period at which things occur
• There will always be 24 hours in a day. Since you
can’t change time, change the way you use your
time to maximise results. Time management is
  about changing behaviors over time.
• Time that is lost can never be regained.
• Time does not wait for anyone.

                                                      13
Understanding Time

          Chronos

TIME For many events, roughly 80% of

in time at which things occur, i.e. and a time to every purpose under
Time of day, etc the heaven – Bible (Eccl. 3:1)

Kairos: A Season in which similar
things occur, i.e. Summer, etc

                                                                       14

Tiny Time Tips

• Learn to politely say no.
• Don’t be a perfectionist.
• Use the internet to find time management programs which you can
    use.

• Be able to be flexible.
• Have a positive attitude!!

                                                                      17
Conclusion

• Too many people dream or fantasise about where they want to go, but never
draw a map to get there

• A goal is a desired result that a person is committed to achieve

• Everyone needs to set goals to drive and guide their actions
• Proper management of your time will maximize your results.

                                                                            18
