Produsage Dr Axel Bruns KCB201 Unit Coordinator [email_address]
Example: del.icio.us Are you producers of del.icio.us? No: you just contribute your own bookmarks your bookmarking may be focussed only on your own needs you’re just sharing what you’ve found finding  evaluating  sharing once again Yes: you collaborate (indirectly) with others through bookmarking and tagging, it becomes clear what sites are interesting to many people (many bookmarks) what these sites are about (common tags) so, you ‘produce’ the del.icio.us index of Websites and a common folksonomy of tagwords and descriptions information  communication  collective intelligence?
What Do We Mean by ‘Producer’? Producer, production: transforming raw materials into finished goods often as a paid economic activity, for commercial gain usually as a separate stage from distribution and consumption usually understood as a deliberate activity, not a side-product of other (e.g. social) activities producer  distributor  consumer (producer advised by consumer  distributor  consumer) (customer-made ideas  producer  distributor  consumer) feedback
What Do We Mean by ‘Product’? Product: finished outcome of a production process often offered for purchase and consumption by ‘end users’ sales are central basis for the producer’s commercial activities existing in discrete units or versions released by producers according to commercial considerations largely controlled by producers – closed to user input Photo by benchilada Photo by sixs†eps Photo by Todd Mecklem Image by Octavio Rojas ?
Beyond Products ‘ Products’ in a collaborative digital environment: the latest update is always immediately available, and never ‘consumed’ e.g. del.icio.us, Wikipedia content is available for direct access and contribution online users participate as content creators, and the Net replaces the distributor ‘ consumers’ join together in interest groups, developer groups users can drive content creation process – no need for dedicated ‘producers’ commercial opportunities in providing value-added services around freely available content not products, but artefacts – temporary and continually revised not production, but produsage – ongoing collaborative process not producers, but produsers – collective intelligence communities
Example: del.icio.us Produsage on del.icio.us: individuals finding, evaluating, sharing bookmarks del.icio.us index built from these small individual acts random, granular acts of participation adding up to continuous collective evaluation of Web content information  communication  collective intelligence individuals both users and producers (i.e. produsers ) but possibly not even aware of this (as user) produser (as producer) similar processes in Wikipedia , open source software, citizen journalism, Flickr , YouTube , Facebook , Second Life , … content content
