King Lear is a play by William Shakespeare about an aging king of Britain, Lear, who foolishly divides his kingdom between two of his daughters, Goneril and Regan, based on their flattery, disinheriting his youngest and most sincere daughter Cordelia. Lear's poor judgment causes him to suffer greatly as his evil daughters betray and humiliate him, driving him mad with grief. Meanwhile, Gloucester and his sons Edgar and Edmund are also caught up in treachery and deception that leads to tragedy for many. In the end, Cordelia is hanged after she tries to help her repentant father, and Lear dies of a broken heart over Cordelia's death, leaving
