Introduction
In this age of information, knowledge is the most
important factor in the long-term success of both an
individual and an organization. In fact, Peter Senge
believes that the only source of competitive advantage
in the future will be the knowledge that an
organization contains and organization’s ability to
learn faster than the competition.
With knowledge taking on increased importance, it
makes sense that there is an opportunity to create
competitive advantage by effectively managing its
storage and use. An effective knowledge management
(KM) architecture creates competitive advantage by
bringing appropriate knowledge to the point of action
during the moment of need. Employee turnover is also
reduced because a large portion of the knowledge and
expertise acquired by the employee is captured in the
knowledge base.
WhatIsAnArchitecture
 architecture means offering or rendering professional
services in connection with the design and
construction of buildings, or built environments.
 Here, in the context of Knowledge Management
Architecture, “Architecture” conveys the mean of
“designing, planning and method of constructing
knowledge management procedure and process.
Knowledge Management
Architecture
The knowledge management architecture consists of
four elements namely:
1) Knowledge Components,
2) Knowledge Management process
3) Information Technology (IT), and
4) Organizational Aspects
Knowledge component includes:
 Knowledge Definition
 Knowledge Categories
Knowledge categories has
often been viewed differently by various researchers.
Knowledge management process, on the other
hand, contains
Steps
&
Activities
to deal with knowledge.
These steps and activities are explained in the
following slides.
Information Technology consists of:
 ITs related support infrastructure such as
communication lines,
networks,
database and many others.
Lastly, Organizational Aspects comprise the
 Organizational Structure,
 Corporate Culture, and
 Human Resource Management.
Among
these four elements, knowledge and knowledge
management process are the key components of the
knowledge management concept.

KM ARCHITECTURE
Knowledge Components
 A knowledge component is a description of a mental
structure or process that a learner uses, alone or in
combination with other knowledge components, to
accomplish steps in a task or a problem.
Knowledge Management ProcessKM process, as already has been told that is includes Steps
and Activities to deal with knowledge, these steps and
activities are:
a) Knowledge Discovery and Detection
b) Knowledge Organization and Assessment
c) Knowledge Sharing
d) Knowledge Reuse
e) Knowledge Creation
f) Knowledge Acquisition
These all form the backbone of the KM process as they
outline all aspects involved in the actual management of
knowledge.
Characteristics of KM Architecture
A successful knowledge management architecture must
be:
• Available (if knowledge exists, it is available for
retrieval)
• Accurate in retrieval (if available, knowledge is
retrieved)
• Effective (knowledge retrieved is useful and correct)
• Accessible (knowledge is available during the time of
need
Conclusion
 Describe and explain briefly all above points.
