Vocabulary?
All the words of a language, or the words used
by a particular person or group.
What is Vocabulary Test for?
The purpose of vocabulary test is to measure
the comprehension and production words both
in speaking and also writing.
1. Limited response
2. Multiple-choice completion
3. Multiple-choice paraphrase
4. Simple completion (words)
The students are required to give a
simple physical action like pointing at
something or giving verbal response like “yes”
or “no.” Usually it is used to test the
vocabulary mastery in the beginner level.
Vocabulary test in limited response can be done by:
 Individual testing
Here you can test the vocabulary mastery through
saying simple instruction like “please go to
window” or “hand me the chalk.” The students can
show that she/he understands about what has been
told to her/him.
 Group testing
It can be done by giving the students a sketch to
each student, then you can give them simple
command like “draw a circle around the boy” or
“put X on every tool.”
Advantages of limited response:
 It causes less stress or nervousness than any other
types of the tests
 It avoids skills such as reading, writing that have not
been developed yet
 It can be scored easily and objectively
Limitations of limited response
 It requires individual testing which takes longer than
group testing
 It is usually difficult to test abstract words with this
technique
 Sketches are sometimes ambiguous (e. g: an orange
may look like a ball, running may like dancing or
jumping)
It is a test in which a sentence with a
missing word is presented; students choose one
of the vocabulary items given to complete the
sentence. This type of test actually is a good
vocabulary test type for students who can read
and write in the foreign language. It makes the
students depend on context clues and sentence
meaning.
e. g: She quickly ___ her lunch.
a. drunk *b. ate c. drove d. slept
 Vocabulary choice
 Context preparation
 Distractor preparation
 Instruction preparation
Advantages of multiple-choice completion:
 It helps students see the full meaning of
words by providing natural context.
 Scoring is easy and consistent
Limitations of multiple-choice completion:
 It is rather difficult to prepare good sentence
context that clearly show the meaning of the
word being tested
 It is easy for students by copying what others
have circled
It is a vocabulary test in which a sentence
with one word underlined is given. Students choose
which of four words that has the closest meaning
to the underlined item. Understanding is checked
by the student’s having to choose the best
synonym or paraphrase of the vocabulary item.
e. g: He was irate when he heard about the new
plans.
a. Interested
b. Surprised
c. Angry
d. d. Sad
Advantages:
 Context preparation is rather easier
 Scoring is easy and consistent
Limitations:
 It is difficult to find good synonyms
 It is easy for students to cheat
It is kinds of vocabulary test where the
students have to write the words in the
missing part which appear in sentences.
e. g: (beauty) She has a _____ new dress.
She has a beautiful new dress.
Advantages:
 It reflects the teaching approaches
 It is generally faster and easier to construct
than are items with distractors
Limitations:
 Fewer words can be tested this way than
writing multiple choice
 There is some difficulty in avoiding
ambiguous context
