Tips for Multiple Choice Testswww.teachingstudentshow.com
Tips for Multiple Choice TestsMultiple choice tests are the most commonly used test because they are easy to grade and effectively evaluate a student’s knowledge
Tips for Multiple Choice TestWork QuicklyThis ensures that the test is complete and not over-interpreted Read each question only once, underlining key words as one readsBreak complicated questions into small parts so the answer can be checked against each partCross out the unimportant parts of the questionIf you can not answer question mark it so you can come back to it
Tips for Multiple Choice Tests+Consider the instructorIf the directions ask you to choose the best answer to each question pick the one the instructor would think is most correctBe wary of “all of above or none of the above because often those are thrown in when a teacher can not think of another content related answer
Tips for Multiple Choice TestsGuess Before ChoosingAfter reading the question you should guess what the answer is before look at the answer choicesThen examine the choices and select the one that closely matches your answer you guessedChoose simple answers even if they seem obviousNever pick an answer before reading all the choices
Tips for Multiple Choice TestsProcess of EliminationCross off the answers that are only partially correctEliminate the correct answers that do not answer the questionsIf you know that one answer is not true then eliminate all of the above
Tips for Multiple Choice TestsLook for Clue WordsIf two answers are opposites, one is probably correctAnswers are usually incorrect with such words as always, never, usuallyLook for grammatical clues between the question and its choicesFor example correct answers and questions have verbs with the same tense and nouns and verbs that agree
Tips for Multiple Choice TestsUnderline familiar wordsBe aware of degree of correctnessWith numbers and dates, one choice is usually too small or too early and one too late and too large are usually incorrect
Tips for Multiple Choice TestsIf two choices are very similar, differing in only degree , the one expressed in more general terms is probably correctUse the content in other questions to help with additional clues
Tips for Multiple Choice TestsBe Careful of Multiple AnswersCarefully evaluate “all of the above” and “none of the above” before selecting themMake sure that all the questions are correct before selecting all of above or incorrect when selecting “none of above”
Tips for Multiple Choice TestsGuessingAs long as you are not penalized for the wrong answers guessing is a good strategyWhen you randomly guess you should get about 25% of the questions correctBy following elimination process, looking for clues and tips the percentage should rise to 75%
Tips for Multiple Choice TestsRandom GuessingThe longest response is usually most often the correct answerAnswer “c” is a good choice if it hasn’t been used for several questionsThe answer that is the longest in length may be the correct answer
