The study aimed to explore the LATCH assessment tool's ability to predict breastfeeding patterns following caesarean and vaginal delivery. 378 mother-baby dyads were assessed using the LATCH tool at 24 hours, 7 days, and 6 weeks. LATCH scores were higher and breastfeeding rates lower in those with c-sections, especially emergency c-sections. LATCH scores positively correlated with longer breastfeeding duration and vaginal delivery. Mothers with low LATCH scores at day 7 were less likely to still be breastfeeding at 6 weeks. The LATCH tool can help identify mothers at risk of early breastfeeding cessation who may need extra support.
