INTRODUCTION: L1Pass
1. (L1Pass) Who are the audience(s)
2. (L1Pass) What genre (Teen Drama) and format (TV) is this and what is its purpose
(Entertain)?
3. (L1Pass) Identify 12 screen captures of shots, angles and movement used in the
camerawork
 Shots & Framing (Close Up, Long Shot, Mid Shot, Point of View, Rule of Thirds)
 Low & High Angles
 Movement (Track, Handheld, Pan)
 Focus (Bathroom scene)
 Colour Tint and Visual Effects (Drunk, Slow Motion)
 Lighting (Shadows at start, bathroom, jumping off roof)
PASS SECTION:Analyse the meaning created by the shots, angles,
movement, focus and colours you identified
4. (Pass) What do the camerawork tell us about the character's emotions, behaviour or
personality?
5. (Pass) Who are the important characters and how is the camerawork showing this?
6. (Pass) Why do the characters come out as shadows of the backlight?
7. (Pass) How are the characters filmed in the frame - as a group or individually? What
could this be suggesting?
8. (Pass) Why does the camera go out of focus - what is this trying to demonstrate about
their statement of mind?
9. (Pass) What does the ground level shot of the girl under the table suggest about her?
10. (Pass) Why are the characters filmed in slow motion jumping of the roof from the low
angle?
MeritSection: Analysethe elements (costume, location, lighting etc)
of mise-en-scene with the meaning you discussed by the
camerawork
11. (Merit) Screen grab 6 more examples of M-E-S that makes this recognisable and what it
tells you about each of the characters
 Lighting and colour (Flare lit up)
 Location (Pub – adult?)
 Costume & Make Up (Blood?)
 Behaviour (Violent, exaggerated, sexual, risk taking, rebellious, frightened, childish)
 Props
 Blocking (when they enter the pub how they are positioned in relation to the adults)
12. (Merit) How is blocking used to show power or authority between the teenagers and the
locals - how are they positioned when they first enter the pub?
13. What stereotype is each young character (PASTE IN YOUR SECTION FROM YOUR
REPORT A FICTION WHERE YOU ALREADY DID THIS – back up with elements of
Mise-en-scene).
Distinction Section: Analyse how the editing and sound work with
the meaning you discussed by the M-E-S and camerawork
(Distinction) Look for how the sound and editing ‘fit in’ with your analysis of mise-en-
scene and camerawork. Discuss how editing and sound link to, emphasise or reinforce
the meaning and purpose you have discussed.
14. (Distinction) Discuss the pace of the editing and its purpose. How does it fit with the
images
15. (Distinction) What is the soundtrack (music) suggesting about mood, when does it reach
a climax and become more energetic?
16. (Distinction) What sound effects do you hear over the music and why are they important
– why do they get mixed louder over the music later on in the clip?
