So what is the
Internet of Things?
IoT is a system of machine-to-machine
communication.
Billions of embedded sensors connect the digital and physical worlds.
Computing systems sense environments and react in real time.

ā€œPersonalizedā€ Learning
A new institute, CHARIOT (Center for
Human Applied Reasoning and IoT), was
set up at the University of Southern
California in 2016 to combine cognitive
science, education research and Internet
of Things technology. Source
Some even want to use IoT to assess teacher quality.
ā€œIntegrating the IoT technology with
the social and behavioural analysis,
a standard classroom can be
transformed into a smart
classroom that actively listens and
analyze the voices, conversations,
movements, behaviour, etc., in
order to come to a conclusion
about the lecturers’ presentation
and listeners’ gratification.ā€ Source
Sensors transmit data about learning happening ā€œanywhere.ā€
Now xAPI systems can upload bits and pieces of ā€œlearningā€ to
a person’s cloud-based Learning Record Store (LRS).
xAPI accepts
transmissions from
various digital devices,
in addition to wearable
sensors, iBeacons,
biometric monitors, etc.
xAPI is also designed for
workforce training aka
ā€œlifelong learning.ā€
No school or certified
teachers required.
Common Core State Standards resulted in education becoming
a fragmented process of demonstrating competencies.
In many states with flexible credit laws, students who demonstrate competency in a standard can
earn credit outside a school setting. xAPI and IoT combined with blockchain technology could create
infrastructure that disconnects learning from schools and teachers entirely. Through a combination
of online learning and ELOs (expanded extended, enhanced, enriched learning opportunities) the Ed
Reform 2.0 vision of a learning ecosystem would be realized.
App-ification makes education mobile and data collection seamless.
Big Picture Learning collaborated with
Salesforce to develop an app that would
monitor students’ out-of-school learning
activities. Enrolled students spend two days
per week outside the classroom.
The app tracks attendance, academic progress, and
even social-emotional competencies attained.

Philadelphia & San Diego are ā€œSmartā€ Cities.
They’re also ā€œLRNGā€ members, a program
supported by the MacArthur Foundation that
promotes ā€œthe city as your classroom.ā€
Both cities are implementing badging programs.
San Diego’s is through the school district and
Philadelphia’s is through the Digital On Ramps
Workforce Development program.
